I can vouch for Jamie Oliver's cavolo nero soup
recipe here

It is also nice if you saute it with pine nuts and raisins [[
recipe here

or just plain steamed and serve with butter a smatter of minced garlic and sea salt

No idea. I grew a whole crop once in my vegetable patch and no matter what I did with it, it tasted like tough, watery cabbage. Are you supposed to cut the stems out? Watching this thread with interest to try and work out where I went wrong!

JamNan · 26/09/2014 08:01

Yes cut the stems out if they are thick. Caterpillars ate all my cavolo nero and kale Angry

Now, I am no fancy cook at all but it's been fab bringing out this veg to my foodie friends with Sunday lunch and them never having heard of it! Then when they "love what I've done with it," it's even better! Grin

Found a recipe on bbc food.. Gently fry finely chopped onions, add garlic, chilli, fresh rosemary and s&p. Cut out middle thick parts of veg and make into inch strips. Add to onions, turn heat to minimum, lid on and steam for 20 mins. Quick stir, then another 10 mins steam. So yum!

Cut the stems out - I love it - tastes strong a bit like Purple Sprouting Brocolli - even nicer if it's had a bit of frost. I put it in everything - pasta sauces, stir fries, frittata....

Bolshybookworm · 26/09/2014 12:02

Ahh, maybe I harvested mine before a decent frost.

Isn't it posh Kale? Yes, cut the stems out, they're bitter and tough.

Kale crisps are lovely Mix with some oil and salt and spread on a baking sheet. Bake for a few mins only. They're a kind of cross between crisps and crispy seaweed.

I got some in my veg box this week, and didn't know what to do with it...I think we're having something along the lines of this for dinner Smile

BaconAndAvocado · 27/09/2014 15:45

Thanks all, have decided to add it to roast tomorrow. If it's like kale, I'll love it.
