Anyone have a flapjack recipe that uses condensed milk?

Hate to admit this, but M&S flapjacks are nicer than my home-made ones - I'm guessing it's the condensed milk. Anyone got a recipe or care to hazard a guess as to how much condensed milk one would add to a basic flapjack recipe?

Will try that then... Considering making them with DD but thinking if I make em alone I don't have to give her any

Thing is I've got to eat the last batch before I can make any more and I feel ill...

Might try some honey ones but that would change the taste completely... I also want another go at Suzy Wong's brownies and I need to perfect my lemon muffin recipe...

I'm not going to stay in my size 10 jeans am I??

Flamesparrow · 29/09/2006 16:18

Turns out that I was feeling so tearful yesterday because I was coming down with DD's sodding cold.

No flapjacks being made here... just lemsip. Looks like I'll be staying in my size 10s

(I've only just shrunk enough to own some, so I ain't messing it up now anyway!!!)

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread. I made SoupDragon's flapjacks today and they were fab. Very sweet and chewy so may cut down in the sugar in the next batch but very easy recipe. Ds will be taking them in his packed tea this week as a 'healthy snack' (well they do have oats in them ).

Not letting this thread die just yet!! I thought exactly the same as you re: M and S flapjacks. I adapted an old recipe and I have to say (ahem...modest cough), they turned out as good as M and S ones! Yippee! Have just started a little blog with some of my tried and tested recipes - you'll find the one for flapjack on 11th September:

I am going to use Carnation light condensed milk. Any opinions on "light"?

Ali4369 · 13/01/2014 09:44

Has Soupdragon cut down on the amount of sugar used? Sure I remember reading something once but cannot find it today.

Ali4369 · 13/01/2014 12:47

Thanks Soup dragon. This is Ali in Cardiff. had a tin of Carnation " light" CM in cupboard for months now. Really want to get rid of it plus M&S dried cranberries BBF jan 2013. I have used your base recipe before and put in old dried fruit.

Ali4369 · 30/01/2014 13:46

30 jan2014 using a whole tin with 500g oats.

FamilyMag · 02/02/2014 10:09

I saw this thread when I was idling in active convos the others day, and thought I'd give it a try, condensed milk hanging around in the cupboard, and all. I used ordinary condensed milk and halved the quantity of sugar (I used soft brown), and they were delicious. And the tasting panel (DH + 3 DCs) all agreed enthusiastically!

Recommended Smile.

Marking place.

dontcallmemam · 05/02/2014 06:42

So that's why M&S flapjacks are so good, a secret ingredient.
Off to copy you all..

AmericasTorturedBrow · 06/02/2014 02:56

Marking place - I have two baking get togethers over the next week and this is easy to put together with DS

delia10 · 18/02/2014 21:32

I have been tweaking this recipe as I found it very, very sweet so reduced the sugar to about 290 gms and the golden syrup to 2 tablespoons. My colleagues at work agreed that it was better with less sweetness.

silverten · 01/05/2014 13:31

Right. I can't get unsweetened milk in lidl, and don't fancy trying to deal with half a tin anyway, so I've just done

500g oats
250g butter
1 tin sweetened condensed milk

In a 160 oven.

Happily all of these quantities are full packs, so no measuring!

Looking good so far- another 5 mins in the oven...

silverten · 01/05/2014 17:00

Mmm. Yum.

Tasty, creamy, but not too sweet. I could easily stop here and use that recipe again.

I'm aiming for something more toffee-ish though so I'll up the sweetness. Next time I'll try adding a couple of tablespoons of syrup and cooking the mixture to have it colour a little before adding the oats.

hottoddyplease · 12/07/2014 07:42

Thanks silverten, I used your quick recipe yesterday and it was great! I added 2 tbsp dark brown sugar with the butter, and held back 2 handfuls of oats as I didn't want to make it too dry. Anyway, they went down very well with friends at dinner :-) eyes up tin for breakfast

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/07/2014 07:50

I tried these after finding this thread a while ago and they were the worst flapjacks I'd ever made, ended up in the bin as no one would eat them.

ChicPea · 26/11/2015 17:00

I'm going to try Soupy's recipe this evening as my ds adores m and s flapjacks. We will have a tasting session tomorrow and will update you.

MerryMarigold · 11/01/2017 13:27

I've just adulterated this recipe:

1 tin condensed milk
300g porridge oats
150g dessicated coconut
50g ground almonds
200g butter
5 Tblsp demerara sugar - melted with the butter and boiled for 2-3 mins
2 Tblsp Alpro coconut/ almond milk
About 25 dried apricots, chopped into 4's or 6's

They smell delicious! Just removed from oven and waiting for them to set and cool. one large tray cut into 24 pieces and a smaller tray, so plenty to last the next few days.

So much for healthy January (the idea is making is healthier than buying - but then you can see how much butter and sugar is going into them!).

LaChatte · 25/10/2018 18:50

Reviving this thread to see if anyone has found an improved recipe which is less sweet but still a bit chewy.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 25/10/2018 21:21

I've made these but I don't add sugar at all. Condensed milk and golden syrup provide all the necessary sweetness. Really, really good.

Excited101 · 05/01/2023 21:17

Updating this (yes I know, zombie) thread to say I’ve just made these. Added dried cranberries (healthy), didn’t have demorara so used light brown and hell knows how much syrup as it had solidified a bit. Haven’t tried them yet, just cooling in the tin.
