I am in the middle of organising my daughter's christening which will be at the end of may and I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for party food? My main ideas were:

Smoked salmon
Crusty bread and butter
A few of salads
Marinated cooked cold peices of chicken
Vol au vents with tuna mayo, prawn mayo and mushroom fillings
Carrot, peppers and sticks of cucumbers with various dips
Cocktail sausages and sausage rolls
Quiche and pizza
Some mini sandwiches for the kids

As for sweet things I thought of
A mix of Strawberry and raspberrys to serve with double cream amd merringues
Chocolate brownies
and Lemon drizzle cake

Also need advice for alcohol and soft drinks
Am expecting between 20-30 guests and wanted to work out how many bottles of wine I should get.
Any ideas would be great!!!

Thanx,

Jules

From my experience I would say make sure you have plenty of soft drinks and get your alcohol sale or return. I did a lunchtime party for ds1, a very family do, lots of people driving away afterwards and for about 50 people we got through about.....3 bottles of wine! And a few beers. I kid you not....we'd allowed about half a bottle pp but fortunately got our money back on the rest.

Delia's mini yorkshire puddings went down a storm at our ds' christening do.

Hi Jules - i agree with the comments on alcohol - we had a lunchtime do and only got thru about 4 bottles of wine and no beer and we had loads on ice etc. Bagels and cream cheese with the smoked salmon works well too and i do the mini yorkshires called tidgy puds by Aunt Bessie with either cocktail sausgaes in them as mini toad in the holes or a bit of beef and horseradish and as treacletart says they always go down very well amongst young and old. Re desserts i did the posh refrigerator cake Delia does a recipe which is really easy and yummy.

Also just thought don't go mad on the salads as people only ever eat in my experience about half what you think they will as you can't get much on a plate at once. I do a sort of nicoise with salad (bag) on the bottom and green beans and tomatoes and olives. Also Nigella's greek salsd is very good too. With either of them you only really need to do one salad.

are you still looking for ideas? i have a fab key lime pie reciepe at home which i can post properly later, its really simple, just a biscuit base (choc digestives for even yummyier pie) juice and zest 3 limes, then make up a lime jelly with 150ml of water, in a separte bowl whisk up 568ml of double cream, add the jelly and lime juice mix gently, pour over biscuit base, bung in fridge for 4-6 hrs, add lime zest and drizzle melted choc on top. also think it would work with other favours of jelly and other citrus friut.

Jules, we had pretty much what you had, easy buffet food although i also included a whole dressed salmon (which although i don't eat salmon looked really nice) plus a selection of sliced cooked meat, a plate of prepared seafoods, prawns etc plus homemade potato salad/coleslaw (prepared the day before). Do you have a local marks and sparks near you? they do good selection of party type food/nibbles already prepared. Alcohol at least 1/2 bottle per adult with plenty of soft drinks for drivers/kids (get more than you need, you can always finish them later )My advice overall is make it as easy for yourself as possible and prepare as much as you can the day before including setting out of tables, chairs, etc. or come the morning and all hell will break loose!! Have a good time
