Over ripe plums and pears need using up

I have 5 very soft plums and a pear that need using up, I guess not enough to make even a small amount of chutney? What can I make/bake?

Also have rhubarb in the garden - can we still use it or will it be too stringy?

Also had a large cabbage in our veg delivery, a third is still left, but now we've received another. If I put it in a home made veg soup with carrots, celery and whatever else is left wilting in the fridge, will it be an overpowering taste?

Thank you Smile

You could make a crumble, or a frangipane tart (I'd leave the cabbage out of those, though.)

A little cabbage is nice in a minestrone style soup.

I'd do crumble with the pears and plums, give the rhubarb away, and steam the cabbage and have with lashings of butter and black pepper.

Fumble crumble (whatever fruit we have in) I'd roast the rhubarb with some honey Nigel Slaters recipe is nice -it keeps in the fridge for a few days as well.

Cabbage could you stir fry it with some bacon as a side for something?

Crumble with the pear and plums.

I'd just bake the rhubarb with a bit of sugar and have it with ice-cream or plain yogurt. That way if it's not all that, you won't have wasted loads of time or other ingredients.

Rumpledethumps every time for the cabbage.

Stew the fruit with sugar and have it with custard. Even easier and quicker than crumble.

For the cabbage you could make coleslaw, or stir fry, or have it grated in a salad. Or make soup and call it cabbage soup so it's officially meant to taste of the cabbage Smile

I'm not a big fan of cabbage Sad we've been eating it fried with bacon for the past few days, which is the only way I eat it, that almost used up one cabbage, then another one arrived in the next veg box. I will request that they don't send any more for now.

I will try coleslaw, am I right in thinking it's just shredded cabbage, carrot and onion in mayonnaise?

I don't fancy cabbage soup Sad

Put the rhubarb in vodka and let it steep till drinkable, add sugar if you want a liqueur.

Try this cake for your fruit...

Pickle the cabbage?

thedrummerswife · 13/09/2014 22:53

Rhubarb vodka? sounds good Grin

Is pickled cabbage the same as sauerkraut?

It doesn't have to be, i think there are variations, I will have a look, I have a very good cook book called salt, sugar smoke, which has some fab pickles etc in.

And yes the rhubarb vodka is rather splendid.
