Your 'beats the takeaway' curry recipes

I am craving curry so much - had two takeaways, one meal out and a ready meal curry this week! I cannot afford to continue like this - can anybody give me a recipe that beats a takeaway?

I love most curries - Indian from Korma to Dansak to Bhuna, and Thai curries - any meat, fish or veg - and sundries, if I could make a peshwari nann I'd be in heaven!

What about murg saag (chicken in spinach)? Or saag paneer for the vegetarians?

Pinkje · 08/09/2014 11:15

I can't cook curry from scratch but if I want a take away taste cheaply and quickly I buy ready cooked chicken and add it to M and S tikka masala sauce in a jar.

I do a Jamie Oliver korma which is always delicious, and much more flavour to it than the jarred stuff.

mmm the korma looks great, and not too many ingredients - that's what I want to avoid - buying loads of spices then being disappointed by the results :)

There is a lamb keema recipe on thismuslimgirlbakes blog which is amazing.

IHeartLockhart · 08/09/2014 13:06

Yeah it's really good, freezes ok as well. I didn't bother with the flaked almonds and coriander as I couldn't find them and probably wouldn't use them again, still tasted great though

Ooh I am getting excited! Gonna take pregnancy test tomorrow (need to wait for a morning wee) as I am sure I must be, the curry craving is so strong! Gonna go a perve on that blog and do an online shop for supplies. Thank you so much everyone xx

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, how often you are planning to cook curry and whether you think full jars/packets of spices are worth it. You could try these people, they make up packets of spices for meals, you just buy the fresh ingredients and follow the instructions included. The ones I have tried have been really nice.

This coconut chicken curry is gorgeous! I've made it so many times since I discovered it. Once you've got the spices in it's really easy.

Did you test?! Grin

Our family favourite at the mo (dp and I are curry fiends but have very young children) is chicken tikka (chicken in tikka paste and yoghurt, marinated and grilled) with a turmeric/coriander/etc (chuck in whatever you like) rice. I make tomato salad and get naan breads etc. yum! And so quick and easy.

OhMyArsingGodInABox · 09/09/2014 08:40

Buy The Curry Secret from Amazon (it's only about a fiver) and make takeaway curry at home.

Be warned, your house will proper reek of onions for days and you need to plan ahead to make them but it is so worth it.

Lush, lush, lush - I had the stuff in to make ThisMuslimGirlBakes tarka dahl yesterday, it is really good - gonna freeze little portions of it and make other curries and have a spread like you'd get from a takeaway. Need to learn how to make that yellow yogurt, I could drink the stuff :)

Yep I did the pregnancy test and it was a faint positive! Trying not to get too excited as I will only be around 5 weeks...eek!

Congrats!! Fingers crossed all is well with the tiny curried bean!! GrinWink

I made dhal last night too; kind of improvised and put spinach and tomato in it and it was amazing! Really really meant to put half in the freezer but...... Accidentally ate the lot!

Noseypoke · 10/09/2014 18:18

Gordon Ramsay's Malaysian chicken curry is the best I've ever made.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2014 18:21

Dahl freezes really well. I tend to add more spicy garlic fried onions when I've defrosted it, plus lots of fresh coriander, to make it feel 'fresher' - if that makes sense!

Mattar paneer is really easy to make at home. Nigella has a recipe which is a useful starting point, but I make mine much spicier than hers.

Sundries - mega-easy salad:
finely chopped red onion / diced cucumber / quartered cherry tomatoes / lemon juice / coriander / mint (or a bit of mint sauce) plus chopped chilli if you want it

mega-easy coconut thingie:
desiccated coconut / coriander / finely chopped green chilli / yoghurt

BarbaraPalmer · 10/09/2014 18:27

the Hairy Bikers Curry book is great
probably massively inauthentic, but their lamb pasanda recipe tastes exactly like the one I get from Tandoori Nights down the road.

Scarletohello · 10/09/2014 19:16

Also you can make a nice Indian mint sauce by mixing plain yoghurt with...mint sauce. It's delicious!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2014 19:22

Scarlet - even better if you add a big squeeze of lemon, a bit of crushed garlic and a teeny tiny pinch of brown sugar. :)

Scarletohello · 10/09/2014 19:39

Mmm that sounds nice! Smile
