Introducing fish into a vegetarian diet - what and how?

I have, for various reasons, decided to introduce a bit of fish into mine and DS's diet. I've been veggie since I was 17 and DS has been veggie since birth.

What would be the best fish to start off trying? I'm was thinking of just cooking some fish fingers but DS is surprisingly not too keen on this idea and just wants to try a piece of plain fish. What's easy to cook for a novice, and would be palatable for two fishie newbies?

A piece of smoked haddock cooked in milk (with parsley and tomato) in the oven for about 20 mins might be an idea?

I'd go with cod. It's pretty bland, in butter with a seasoning on that you already know. My daughter stopped being a vegetarian a year ago and found that using seasonings she knew (piri piri seasoning usually) made the new foods and textures more acceptable.

Yes prob start with a white fish or some salmon, both fairly non fishy flavour. Or if you're feeling rather flush some monkfish kebabs skewered with your favourite veggies would be tasty (yum)

My family has been vegetarian all our life. For various health reasons we started fish last year. So our story is similar to yours. I found that seabass & salmon are high in nutrition so started with these.

For seabass: got the cleaned fillets from Waitrose. Washed & then marinated them with oil mixed with Bart's fish spices. Just rubbed them all over and left them for an hour or two. Then pan fried them skin side down first (about 4 mins) in a nonstick pan with no extra oil. Then flipped & cooked the fleshy side for couple minutes. Ready to eat with rice or veggies. This proved to be quite good as the marinating takes away all the fishy smells & is a great start for vegetarians. My DD simply loves it!

For salmon - I just bake it in a handmade pouch of aluminium foil with some lemon & salt for about 10-12 mins. It's excellent for health but does give some fishy smell which I find difficult sometimes.

Good luck & happy cooking!

Thanks for the suggestions, especially Artistic, it's helpful to hear from another ex-veggie!
I think a piece of plain cod or salmon might be the way to go.

I'm keen to get ethically sourced fish - is there anything I need to look out for when shopping? (prob at Tesco, Waitrose or Aldi)

I also exited veggie life via fish. My advice buy the freshest fish possible, it will taste subtle and milky and won't pong so much. That means don't buy from supermarkets - even Waitrose...go to a fishmonger.

Fish and chips!

Not tuna!! I am a lifelong veggie turned pescy after a long bout of illness, and I hate fresh tuna. Too meaty!!! Bareable from a tin.

My first fish was a fish finger sandwhich.
