Rice wine / dry sherry question!

The new recipe I'm trying says use either rice wine or dry sherry.

Is rice wine the same as rice wine vinegar?!?! I don't want to use the dry sherry as I'm cooking this meal for my kids too!

No, vinegar is sharper. Use the sherry because the alcohol will evaporate in the cooking (it's not strong anyway and I expect it's just a couple of tablespoons).
You're doing a stir-fry aren't you!

sweetheart · 21/09/2006 16:20

Oh dear - I already used the vinegar! Oh well better luck next time! I'm not doing stir fry - I'm making chicken with mushroom and cashew nuts with a chinese type sauce.

So can I give sherry to my ds then - he's 9 months old. Oh and whilst I'm asking can he eat cashew nuts? There's no nut allergies in mine or dh's family!

If it's been cooked in a dish, I have to say I wouldn't worry about the sherry or the vinegar. And if you have no history of nut issues in your family, I personally would not worry about the cashews either, but I think others might advise differently....I think you are supposed not to give nuts at all until they are two because of sensitising them to an allergen...

Well, you've opened a can of worms now coz my sister and I have just been talking about things like this!

I think people are too oversensative these days and as a result there is alot more ashma and skin conditions around!

I think I'll put a few in his meal - He's only going to have it once.

No it isn't the same as rice wine venegar

Don't worry about the alcohol, as it all evaporates as you cook the food, just leaving behind the flavour with no actual ethanol

sweetheart · 21/09/2006 16:28

Oh bugger - my dinner is gonna taste horrible

Is rice wine a wine then?!?!? Is it in the alcohol section of the supermarket?

Just add some sherry to it as well now Or just drink the sherry as you eat it.

MrsBadger · 21/09/2006 16:33

yes rice wine is an actual drink (though the way it's made has more in common with beer than with grape-type wine) - it's also called saké.
Haven't seen it in Tesco though - we get ours from the Chinese shop down the road...

sweetheart · 21/09/2006 16:36

ok, well I've stuck in some sherrry too - it said dry but I've only got Harveys Bristol stuff!

Why, oh why do I bother trying new things - it always goes tits up.I bet tonigths meal is going to taste absolutly awful and then dh will laugh!
