Husband loves curry but with two little ones I am not horribly keen on feeding them takeaway ones. Have no idea how to cook one though so I think it's time to learn! Can anyone recommend a good easy curry cookbook for me? I need the recipes to be "fast" if possible Smile

Madhur Jaffrey is my favourite curry cookbook author

I love cooking curries and here are some of my quick and easy regulars (and fairly adaptable to make mild for kids)

Prawn Curry is one of my favourites

This marinade for chicken legs is similar heat to tandoori

Potato and or cauliflower curry as a tasty side

Kofta curry (meatballs)

Hope this helps : )

For authentic Indian style curries I recommend the Miss Masala book. All her recipes are online though add it started as a blog. She gives really explicit instructions.

I have recommended the Hairy Bikers Indian cook book to so many people. I know it sounds unlikely (they make me citing a bit on the telly!) but it is really good and everything I have tried from there has been lovely. I've bought a copy for three friends and they all agree Smile

Citing? Cringe is what I thought I had typed!!! Blush

gymnasticrobotics · 26/08/2014 21:39

Thanks so much for the links, the recipes look achievable (for me!), just reading them makes me want a curry now Grin. Will give it a go this weekend!

THE best is the Australians Woman's Weekly Indian Cookery
This One

I've made loads from it over the years and always found it easy to follow/find ingredients and every dish tastes very different.

MrsPnut · 26/08/2014 21:42

I like the Indian food made easy book by Anjum Anand and have made plenty of the dishes from it. The beef with chillies is especially good.

gymnasticrobotics · 26/08/2014 21:42

Hairy Bikers is a surprise! I would never have connected them with curries but will have a peek when I go the bookshop next time. Thanks!

I came on to recommend Arjum armand, I love her (she did an MN chat a whole ago with some recipes that is worth looking up). I especially like her veggie cookbook, the recipes are really interesting and varied which makes it easier to cut down on meat a bit. She also has a few curry specific ones.

IScreamForIceCream · 26/08/2014 23:35

3rd vote for Anjum Anand - she has a few, eg veggie, quick, healthy.

And she has very beautiful skin (shallow).

Phalenopsis · 28/08/2014 16:24

I don't recommend a cookbook but I do recommend this website: www.mamtaskitchen.com/index.php Her recipes are wonderful and most are easy.

ilovepowerhoop · 28/08/2014 16:30

another vote for Anjum Anand (we have several of her books) and also Rick Steins India cookbook

carly7 · 29/08/2014 10:14

I definitly will try the website of mamtaskitchen!

Thanks for it!

mrspremise · 31/08/2014 14:31

Miss Masala by Malika Basu is brilliantly straightforward. She hss a blog too - Quick Indian Cooking - so you can give some of her recipes a try Smile

FunnyBird · 31/08/2014 14:52

I like The Curry Secret and The New Curry Secret. Kris Dhillon.
Long prep, but freezable stages and typically 15 minutes from there to a variety of curry flavours like a restaurant (so not authentic, but what we're used to).

gymnasticrobotics · 31/08/2014 20:56

Thanks so much for the suggestions! As quite a few of you suggested Anjum Anand I googled her recipes and made Lamb Rogan Josh and Chicken Korma tonight. Although i made them a bit too spice heavy (didn't scale down the spices enough) they still taste lovely! DH cannot make his mind up though on how it compares to takeaway curries, I think he has an attachment to their thick sauces (mmm....).
Also made a watermelon slushie with my ice cream maker, now happy, full and satisfied. Will definitely try other recipes again soon I spent a fortune in spices!!

Hairy bikers is shit IMHO. I've just made another curry from their book tonight and somehow it manages to be bland flavour wise while at the same time being far too hot heat wise. Had the consistency of soup with meat chunks floating in it.

ilovepowerhoop · 31/08/2014 21:00

I like her pork vindaloo recipe (not like vindaloo from the takeaway!) as it is vinegary, garlicky and has the crunch of cashew nuts too.

I really like the Hairy Bikers curry book too.
