URGENT - Constipation!

Sorry, a dire query about a gruesome topic!!

DD (9 months) has had a funny weekend of bringing up her milk here and there and as a result she's really constipated. I've tried giving her more fruit etc but she's still really 'bunged up'. Its really causing her discomfort now and she is not a happy bunny. Apart from getting more fluids down (I'm trying but they keep coming back!!), has anyone got any sure fire laxative ideas? PLEASE?????

I've done a quick search but I couldn't find much, have to keep nipping off to see to her.

Thanks!

Wonderful
So glad you didn't have to go down the 'manual route'!

wobblyknicks · 07/04/2004 13:04

It's not back to normal, still greeny and thick but in a pasty way, not a roll-off-the-nappy way!!

Oh I do love a good happy poo ending.

maybe we should change our name to Fishwivesnet????

wobblyknicks · 07/04/2004 13:28

never believed before dd that I could get obsessed by poo - especially waiting for it!!

good name for mn!!!

Thomcat · 07/04/2004 15:04

I keep a poo diary!!!!!!!!!
Not for me but for the consitipated one!

wobblyknicks · 07/04/2004 21:58

Lol tc!! Not a bad idea, I never even think about it until she doesn't go for a couple of days, then I have to rack my brains remembering the last time (and it always seems longer ago than it really was!).

Not really relevant to your situation Wobbly but I can't resist joining in as we;re obsessed with poo/constipation in our house - DD2 (who is just coming up to her first birthday) has suffered since birth. We've tried just about everything but have recently had brilliant results from cranial osteopathy - Thomcat have you tried this for your dd? I should say that I was 100% sceptical before trying it (agreed mainly due to pressure from dh)but each treatment DD2 has been for has had very definite and immediate results - not just on the day but for up to a week afterwards. I've no idea how it works but it's great that it does! Expensive though.

An old nanny/nurse overheard a friend of mine whose son was constipated.....she was looking for laxatives.......and the nurse told her that muscovado sugar mixed with water worked for constipation every time. It's 3tsp sugar to 5tsp water I think. She tried it and said it was fantastic!

We have just got a juice extractor. i have put any fruit I lay my hand on and DS(2yrs) has dirtied his napppy 3 times this morning! He sometimes suffers with constipation, like some of the others I only remember after a few days that he hasn't been! I will give him one of my special fruit/veg mixture drinks every other day from now on.

moominmama86 · 11/04/2004 11:56

I think it's been mentioned before but prune puree/juice really does the trick. Ds (9 mo)is often constipated so now I just bung a load of prunes in the liquidizer and mush them through a sieve. Mix a few teaspoons of the resulting brown goo with warm water and hey presto! nappy fun!

No one warned me having a baby would turn me into a poo-obsessive

Thomcat · 13/04/2004 12:59

Galaxy - get her on the lactulose, it'll soften her stools.

hmb · 13/04/2004 13:18

If this becomes a persistant problem please go to your GP and get her difficulties sorted. Dd was chronicaly consipated for almost 2 years. For some children giving fruit jiuce is not enough, and I would despare of being told to give her more fruit to eat If she had eaten any more tangerines she would have gone orange!

In her case she became frightened to poo, as it had caused pain in the past, and this became quite a problem. In extreme cases the blockage can become so bad it stretches the bowel and the child stops getting the urge to go to the toilet. I'm not saying this to worry you (dd is now 7 and fine) but constipation can become a real probelm that needs treatment with things like lactolose. If the problem persists please get it sorted out asap....the sooner the better.

i agree, hmb, a paediatrician told me up to 1/4 of referrals to a general paeds clinic were about continence problems - often "constipation with overflow" (I'm sure you get the picture..) which can take years of counselling and drugs to sort out.

hmb · 13/04/2004 14:09

Thankfully we got things sorted out before they got that bad. But constipation can be such a problem and isn't always taken as seriously as it should be. My dd would spend days crying with the pain of stopping herself from going to the toilet. It was such a horrible time for us.

Thomcat · 14/04/2004 17:31

I gave Lottie 2.5 ml of Sennacot (sp) yesterday and this morning and she passed a very large, not too hard, poo this morning. Oh the releif, for both of us. I get so happy when she does a poo that doesn't make her cry. In fact, while she was going today - she laughed!!!!!!!!!!

All week, as usual, I've been doing all the 'right' things with regard to her diet etc but no sign of anything so was very releived when the laxative worked.

I wonder if it would be bad for her if I had to give her a spoon of Sennacot once a week, only if she hadn't been for 4 or 5 days, as well as keep on with the prune juice, linseeds, fruit etc etc?
