Evening -

Am due with 1st baby in three weeks, and I am quite concerned that DP can't cook to save his life. (Will rectify this at later date, no patience now)

Does any one have any really good recipe suggestions of things yummy and easy suitable to be made, then frozen that I can just heat up and things when baby has arrived?

Or what they have found useful?

are you sure

can you not just buy him a cook book

point him in the direction of easy to make stuff and possibly ready meals (M&S do great ready meals)

introduce him to jacket potatoes and local take-aways

if you're sure, stuff that's good to freeze

soups
shepherds pie
fish pie
bolognese sauce
pies
casseroles

etc

ooh, and me too please, I'm six weeks off and just starting to think about this.

So far my list consists of:
spaghetti bolognese (DP can at least cook pasta)
beef stew
big minestrone soups with lots of beans and stuff in
veg curry
er, that's it.

Will probably also buy some frozen fish pies and so on too.

I kinda wanted some recipes, and no - him cooking jacket potatoes is fine, but i will have to stand there and say "do this at such ad such a point etc" other wise he seems to just fudge everything up and it really fustrates me.

healthy recipes any one?

buy a job lot of mince, chop up onions and a whole load of other veg and add to browned mince, then once cooked, split in half, add mased poato to the top of one half ( in containers ) for shepherds pie, add tinned tomatoes to the other half of the mince and continue to cook, then you have bolognese sauce!!!

Twiglett · 18/09/2006 19:42

for bolognese side add tbsp basil, 1/2 tbsp oregano, sprinkle rosemary, bay leaf, garlic, splash worcestershire sauce

for shepherds pie side add mixed herbs and tin baked beans (heinz) before topping with mash

what do you normally cook?

loujay · 18/09/2006 19:44

OOOH!! Baked beans in with the mince then!, have never done that, always have them on the side (much to DH's disgust he always wants gravy and veg)
Thanks twiglett, will try that next time

hi emzickle, I agree with the mince idea but I'd break it into 3 lots and make some lasagne. It freezes well in individual portions. Or you could make the lasagne with the bolognaise sauce.... I also stocked up on frozen and tinned vegies and easy meats I could chuck in the oven such as filo chicken and kievs etc.
It is a really great idea to do this before hand for when you get home as well as dp by himself. I didnot feel like cooking when I got home and dp is hopeless in the kitchen. He did one night make a fantastic tuna salad tho, maybe your dp could whip one up for you too! No cooking, they cant burn themselves (or the house down!!)
Some advice : dont stand on his shoulder telling him how you would do stuff. My dp hates this and now days I relax and am thankful he is trying (not just my patience!! ) If he's like mine he will get better with practice,
Best of luck

second lasagne

casseroles - do thick stews as well - easy to reheat or stick in a baking dish with a topping of puff pastry - pie

Twiglett · 21/09/2006 11:21

ooo eidsvold now why have I never thought of turning a casserole into a pie?
