Eggs - use by date query

Eleanor02 · 08/08/2014 09:16

Got quite a few Waitrose organic eggs in the fridge - Use by date is 29th August. They were much reduced when I bought them - problem was I bought so many because of the price.

Anyway, they smell alright but am wondering if it would be foolhardy to use them in a raw egg recipe like chocolate mousse. Or best to cook/bake with them or, sadly, throw out? Thanks!

Take it you mean July? I'd use them, you'll know as soon as you crack them if they are off Grin

I have a very relaxed attitude to egg dates though much to the horror of my DH

29th August or 29th July? Because if it is July, you've got plenty of time to use them Grin
I use out of date eggs, DH tests them by putting them in a bowl of water - if they float, they have gone off, something to do with the air sack inside getting bigger when they are old...

August, I meant BlushBlush

As pp said do the float test, if they lie completely flat they are fresh, if they stand up on end but still.touch the bottom they are less fresh but fine for cooked things I'd say, if they float throw them away.

Very sorry - I meant 29th July.

I've just put the eggs in water - lying perfectly still at the bottom of the pan!

Many thanks for this tip - and your swift responses!!
