Doing DS packed lunch for the first time.... after all the threads on how you would judge someone by their packed lunch, how have I done?

His lunch for school. Big novelty for me as I havent had to do them before!

I got him...

Bread Rolls
Ham
Cheese Strings
Sausage rolls
Pepperarmi things
Chicken Tikka pieces
Papiya
Bananas
Apples
Melon
Grapes
Mini chocolate bar
Frubes yoghurt things
Blackcurrent squash

Obviously not all on the same day

So, marks out of 10?

(Cost me a small fortune though! Dinners at the school would be cheaper!!)

I'll tell you now the 3rd, 4th and 5th items will cause a stir on here....

CountTo10 · 16/09/2006 21:31

Oh well the stirrers don't have to eat them!!!!

Tamba I think you've done a sterling job there - that's what's called a balanced diet!! I can't see why he wouldn't like it and I would definitely go to him to do 'trades'!!!!

wheresthehamster · 16/09/2006 21:45

I'd drop the pepperami but the rest sounds great. Well done! As someone who's done the dinner lady bit I'd recommend making sure your son can open his own cheesestrings and frubes. The scissors we used to open these for the kids were rank by the end of the session. (Obviously not time to wash them every time as to hectic).
The worst packed lunch I ever saw was a Da*rylea
Lunchable eaten by a yr6 boy. That was all he had every day.

CountTo10 · 16/09/2006 21:48

Ahhh poor him makes me feel quite upset!!

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 21:51

Wow! will he eat all that? Impressed!

wheresthehamster · 16/09/2006 21:53

Forgot to say, make sure the lunchbox is named clearly on TOP (don't want anyone tipping it upside down to identify it), that your son can open it himself (otherwise may have to wait a while till someone is free to help), and put a freezer block in every day (visions of warm chicken tikka - NOT nice).
Hope you're not offended if you've already thought of these!

morningpaper · 16/09/2006 21:55

Papaya? He is going to get the crap kicked out of him

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/09/2006 22:14

Hadnt thought of a freezer block thing, dont think I have one!

Hopefully will get away with the frubes - hes not allowed to take yoghurt to school for some reason.

Filly - I dont know if he will eat it all, he gets what hes given and eats it or goes hungrey

Mp - Do you think so?

(Hes 4.5 btw)

Whats wrong with pepperami btw - too much salt?

Am well aware that sausage rolls and cheese strings are crap(ish)

I've never had the nerve to pick up a pepperami and look at the ingredients after the mum or dad in Roseanne once said it contained the hair, tail and trotters of a pig all minced up. In some quarters it's not even classed as 'food' apparently.

PanicPants · 16/09/2006 22:33

Looks good apart from the obvious.

Slight hijack, I've been doing lunches for ds to take with him to CM (he's 1) and am struggling.

Afraid to admit last week he got a lot of jars , bananas, cheese and fruit pots

Any quick, easy, healthy ideas?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/09/2006 22:37

Ewwww... am off to read the ingredients...

Peperami.... Port (108%), Port fat, Salt, Spices, Glucose, Flavour enhancers (E621, E635), Garlic Powder, Preservative (E250)

How can you have 108%??

No mention of trotters

Verdict on them?

OP posts:
Mercy · 16/09/2006 22:42

Looks ok Tamba - but make sure you are following school guidelines (if any) re squash and chocolate. And make sure he can open things himself (wrappers, frube tubes etc)

Panicpants: am wracking my brains but it seems so long ago (not - ds is only 2.5!)

Mercy · 16/09/2006 22:46

Sorry, missed your last post - derr!

What is 108% port? - no idea! If he has it once in a while it really doesn't matter. I am slightly more concerned re salt content in food rahter than fat or sugar tbh

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/09/2006 22:49

Sorry, was a typo. Should say 108% pork

CountTo10 · 16/09/2006 22:52

Panic pants you can't go wrong with any type of fruit or cucumber/carrot pieces, dried fruits, finger sandwiches (my lo loves cream cheese & jam), breadsticks. Goodies and Organix both do a really good range of snacks that are really healthy, cereal and fruit bars, crisp type things, biscuits etc (the gingerbread ones went down a storm with my lo).

PanicPants · 17/09/2006 17:22

Thankyou countto10

I already give the goodies snacks - we love the gingerbread men too! And the sliced cucumber etc. My real problem is the mian meal part. Ds has gone off fingerfood lately and only seems to want to be spoon fed!

Cream cheese and jam?

nikkie · 17/09/2006 17:28

BTW Tamba the novelty will soon wear off!
I'm dreading dd2 starting full days as I'll have 2 lunches to make (and she doesn't eat sandwiches!)

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 18/09/2006 09:19

He has taken...

Ham Roll
Sausage Roll
Grapes (halved)
Banana
Raisens
Mini dairy milk
Frube
Juice

And for break time

Juice
Apple

Hes had to take a second bag

Too much? Just right?

OP posts:
leander · 18/09/2006 09:26

Sounds like alot but if he is a good eater its fine, will he have time to eat it all?
Ds had his 1st packed lunch tiday and he got
Ham sandwich, yoghurt, apple, strawberries and apple juice. All the way to scholl he was asking " Is it lunchtime yet?" he is gonna be starving when he gets home,I need to think what else i can put in as school dont allow crisp or chocolate.

lunavix · 18/09/2006 09:30

humzingers are great - the only fruit bar with no sugar in them. They look a bit like dog chews but taste okay!

I'd have left out the sausage roll - not entirely sure he'd need a sausage roll and a sandwich roll??

I'd possibly add a muffin/cookie/gingerbread man that we'd baked together (if you have time) then it's a nice sweet treat that you know is healthy (ish!)
