Classify the following foods as junk/healthy

  1. Fish fingers (100% cod)
2. Sausages 3. Rice 4. Pasta 5. Cereal (Shreddies, Bran flakes etc, not sugar coated cereal!)

I think all are pretty healthy, possibly the sausages are least healthy. My children eat A LOT of these foods, so interested to know what people think of them.

Oxo I am just waiting for Boris to come on and point out that I have been banned from Perfect Pizza for being such a demanding customer, so I think I had better shut up right now tbh

(but yes I think your Italian style pizza would be lovely and healthy)

tortoiseshell · 17/09/2006 13:05

I celebrated when ds1 ate pizza for the first time ever the other day - he has always found it too 'complicated' a food (and he isn't SN btw, just ridiculously fuusy), but we made our own, I made the base in the bread maker, and then chose our own toppings - I think he had just a tiny bit of tomato sauce then some cheddar cheese. But it felt quite healthy!

  1. Fish fingers (100% cod) Fine. Would rather give DS 'real fish' for the 'real food' aspect, but fine nutritionally.
2. Sausages Fine if good quality. Apparantly some sausages use cheek cuts which have the thyroid glands in, and this is a problem if eaten too often. Pink sludge ones - junk. 3. Rice . Fine. White not as healthy as brown, but white isn't 'junk'. 4. Pasta .Fine. 5. Cereal (Shreddies, Bran flakes etc, not sugar coated cereal!) Fine.

(actually am avoiding Fish Fingers atm because the haddock / hoki ones have disappeared from the chiller, and I am trying not to buy cod - due to near extinction)

puff · 17/09/2006 14:06

They are all fine IMO - there are cheapo quality fishfingers which I would avoid, same with sausages - I buy them from an organic butcher, nothing wrong with a bit of organic pig ear lol.

Rice and pasta - I avoid the "quick cook" rice and pasta as it is more processed, other than that white and brown pasta are staples for us.

Cereal - not sure as we don't tend to have it. I know there can be a lot of hidden sugar and salt in seemingly healthy cereals, so if I was buying them, I'd look out for the ones with least quantities of these additions.

serenity · 17/09/2006 14:07

I hate sausages with meat in them, pink sludge ones taste luvverly, which is why we eat them about once every two months.

I can't see a problem with any of these foods in moderation, although I'm the only person who eats fish fingers here (in a sarnie with mayo and cheese)

Just wanted to sat about 'lean' mince beef (from an earlier post) we buy extra lean mince and I have never yet had a problem frying/browning it. I probably use about a teaspoon of olive oil where I soften the onions first, tastes ok to me too!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/09/2006 14:13

I don't like sausages but all seem fine to me.

Gobbledigook · 17/09/2006 14:15
  1. Fish fingers (100% cod) - I think 100% cod fillet fish fingers are fine
  1. Sausages - shop bought ones are often crap really but I buy butchers sausages which are 99.9% meat so I say 'healthy'

  2. Rice - healthy (mine don't like it though)

  3. Pasta - healthy

  4. Cereal (Shreddies, Bran flakes etc, not sugar coated cereal!) - healthy

MissChief · 17/09/2006 14:44

sure it's already been said but simplistic to classify as good or junk food, depends on quality of each item.

oxocube · 17/09/2006 17:36

Franny, I remember your pizza thread a few weeks ago .

oxocube · 17/09/2006 17:42

And good for your ds, Tortoiseshell, sounds lovely. There are lots of foods I would discourage (although not ban) my kids from eating - anything which is basically meat based but only 50% is meat for example, makes my stomach churn, but imo proper pizza is a pretty healthy option, esp with a bit of salad. Tomatoes are superfoods after all, as is garlic, and if you avoid salami toppings and the like and go for vegetables, I think it ticks lots of boxes.

Enid · 17/09/2006 17:44

my fish and chip shop told me that cod being extinct is a myth

?

motherinferior · 17/09/2006 17:45

Your fishmonger is talking out of his bottom, I'm afraid, Enid

Enid · 17/09/2006 17:46

I think all quite healthy tbh

everything in moderation chez Enid

I would think the fish fingers are the least healthy because of the coating

Gingerbear · 17/09/2006 17:46

All healthy IMO.

Enid · 17/09/2006 17:46

he had a very persuasive sign up

something about UK fisherman still fishing sustainably?

sure its all bollox but it made me feel better about ordering cod and chips twice

oxocube · 17/09/2006 17:52

Yumm, could murder cod and chips with extra batter right now Enid!!

tangox3 · 18/09/2006 04:26

According to Diabetes Australia...

Rice - Lowest GI in Basmati or Doongara. Other white and brown both NOT recommended GI wise. Still give them to my child though. he's not a diabetic and a variety of carbs is great.

Pasta - Durum wheat pasta has a Low GI ...Makes no difference whether white or wholewheat as both fine due to the way they're processed.

I'd call all the rest fine for your child...sausages dependent on processing and ingrediants I suppose.

"There's no such thing as good/bad foods, only good/bad diets". Don't know who said that, but it's true - all those foods are fine as part of a balanced diet, with fruit and vegetables too! The fish fingers and sausages should be grilled, not fried, and sausages should be bought from a butcher not the supermarket. As for rice, it's what you eat with it that makes it healthy or unhealthy. A home made vegetable curry or lean mince chilli concarne would be good. Same goes for cereal - whatever you do don't put sugar on it or you might as well be eating sugar puffs!

Pizza unhealthy?
Wot a load of bollocks (unless it's a Pizza Hut one with a topping of Pedigree Chum.OMG I went in once just to try it out.Still have flashbacks.)

The only problem with fish fingers and sausages idf done to excesss is that they make kids lazy.
Chewing is so easy. Also, they should not about the animal as it is whole, which so many kids don't.

As an adult,I love food that takes a long time to eat-more pleasure for less calories.
So much food now is sold in semi digested form so can be sucked up in seconds, with resultant massive calorie hit.

Are you sure about those 99.9% meat sausages GDG?
I don't think even the best sausages have that much meat. They generally need a filler to keep them together and give them that familiar texture.

oxocube · 18/09/2006 13:24

moondog at your doggy pizza!
