Get thee to a library and get out 'a girl called jack' she also has a blog but I found the recipe book easier to use! She fed herself and her son for £10 a week at one stage, we use a lot of her recipes and they are tasty!
However, you will need mint/ parsley plants for a lot of her recipes!

For really cheap, I love spaghetti with chilli and garlic. Fry three cloves of garlic and a teaspoon of dried chilli flakes in four tbsp olive oil.

Makes sure garlic doesn't brown. Take off heat as soon as cooked.

cook spaghetti in salted water, reserve about half a cup of water. Add spag to oil and reheat stirring round. Add water which gives it a glossy appearance.

makes value pasta taste amazing and is really really cheap.

Hi - Under the topic 'Money' on MN, the Credit Crunch threads are excellent - lots of advice and sharing of ideas of how to live on tight budgets there.

Do you know Approved Foods? Great website for loads of food that is nearing sell by dates - sold very cheaply from this site. Includes healthy/organic ranges.

Dancingqueen - great site. Thanks for link.

eggs are a great source of cheap protein for your 9 month old. Mine will eat eggs with anything at at anytime of the day!

Some tips from Jack Monroe that I can remember off the top of my head are:-

scrub instead of peeling carrots as much of the goodness is in the skin and you are just throwing that goodness away if you peel them.

Buy value baked beans and wash the sauce off in a colander. 9 month old will probably like the texture of beans but the sauce will be too salty. Add the rinsed beans to some cheap tinned toms and some herbs if you have them. Would make a good and healthy pasta sauce.

Jack monroe's soda bread is very cheap and very easy. Might be possible for you to make it while your DC naps.
