Tony should have his mind on other issues!

Because it's the only thing we all have in common with every single person in the world.

(Oh, go on, someone trump that with "no, we've all got pores, you nobbo" or something, you know you want to).

Thomcat · 15/09/2006 21:44

Me, personally, ...... errrrrr, cos I don't go out anymore. If I stay in on a Saturday I make sure we have a lovley dinner planned and a good bottle of wine to compensate for being in.

The UK - cos everyone's getting fat!

aaronsmummy · 15/09/2006 21:47

I eat to fuel my body, it seems to have become far too important what we chose to eat.

Because a good quality diet affects your health in a positive way. Eating should be a social event not just fuel...

FrayedKnot · 15/09/2006 21:49

It's normal to be obsessed with food.

Look at teh French, or the Italians.

Cappuccino · 15/09/2006 21:50

because we're all professional cooks

well I am. I cook a meal for a small special needs group every day in my own home

pay is crap however

pupuce · 15/09/2006 21:51

I am Belgian - hence my reply below and I am obsessed with food!

FrayedKnot · 15/09/2006 21:52

I think it is desperately sad that anyone can think of food only as fuel

aaronsmummy · 15/09/2006 21:53

It's because I have more important things to think about.

pupuce · 15/09/2006 21:54

Like what Aaronsmummy ????

hunkermunker · 15/09/2006 21:55

Like what?

You can only think of more important things by making sure you've eaten well though. Otherwise all you can think is "I'm HUNGRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!"

aaronsmummy · 15/09/2006 21:55

OMG there are so many things more important than food, am I really in the minority here.

OP posts:
aaronsmummy · 15/09/2006 21:58

I mean thinking about it not actually eating it, that is of course of paramount importance

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 15/09/2006 22:23

But you can only do/think about any of those important things by making sure you've eaten decently - and to do that takes a bit of thought, no?

If you just eat shite, you become dull of brain and heavy of arse and can't think about/do all the important things anyway.

So yes, it's of paramount importance.

riddleywalker · 15/09/2006 22:35

I remember when I was in the 6th form (and yes, this is going back some time) we had a trendy general studies teacher (who we all fancied like mad, natch) who reckoned that in the 21st century we would just have a pill at each meal time. I used to think how great this would be, leaving so much time for all the important things like ...erm...smoking Consulate, drinking cider and snogging boys in the upper sixth at school discos. I still think this would be an dieal state of affairs, but alas it never came to pass.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 15/09/2006 22:47

ummm...cos it tastes nice?

themoon66 · 15/09/2006 23:23

Coz every time you turn on the telly there is Gill McKeith or one of her clones banging on about it.

2shoes · 15/09/2006 23:27

food is not the most important thing in the world but mn is obsessed with it
not a day goes by without another thread with people preening about being wonderful parents cos their kids eat this and that and slagging of otheres who don't
sorry but that is not important to me as I have MUCH more pressing things to worry about thatn what others are feeding their kids

Jimjams2 · 16/09/2006 08:38

Food is a source of major stress in this house. (Kids) mealtimes are dreaded. Teatime is the most awful part of the day. And I get fed up reading every label trying to remember whether bloody yeast extract is allowed or not. And yep way more important things to worry about. In the case of ds1 it is just fuel. And often difficult to get enough into him.

aDAdOnMumsnet · 16/09/2006 09:01

It's just life isn't it. You can't get away from it. You have to think about it every few hours, shopping for it, cooking it, feeding yourselves, your kids. I agree you can take it a bit far though.

Jahan · 16/09/2006 09:56

I think we have realised that in order to eat well these days, we have to be more focussed on food. We have been so oblivious to how poor the nations diet has been for so many years and now we have to educate ourselves so we need to discuss food and diet.

The fact that we live in a multicultural society means that there is such a vast choice of foods available and recipes to choose from. We're not just serving up standard meat and two veg so its nice to share ideas.

Always a good topic of conversation.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 16/09/2006 11:19

Am wondering if its more that, for the first time really, we have the option not to be obessed with food. So we can get away with not cooking, we can get away with not shopping every day, we don't have to pee about with tinning and bottling and curing and drying stuff. And fair enough, for many good reasons, some people are very relieved by that, cos its not something they are so interested in. My god, if someone invented a self-cleaning house I'd be delighted! But some people do see to like cleaning.

And some of us love food and see eating together and enjoying food as integral to family life-probably because it is something we enjoy and want to share with our kids. And so we like talking about it.

Some of us also have kids who turn into Damien when supplied with sugar.

Do you know I am always thinking about food? In a good, what-would-be-better-apricots-or-figs-in-chocolate-dark-chocolate-or-white way.
