Freezing home-made food - lots of advice and tips needed please

I have never frozen home made food and have decided to try and start saving time and money - I'm going back to work next week so I think it will work well.

I have no idea what I should and shouldn't do. Can I freeze pretty much everything? Does food have to be thoroughly cooled before putting into freezer? Does food have to be defrosted before reheating?
Also any tips on recommendations of containers etc suitable for freezing would be useful.

Thanks.

Meat based things freeze the best I reckon - potato is never quite the same after defrosting. Curries & mince/stews freeze well, fish & veg soups do OK as well.

I freeze most stuff in plastic containers from lakeland but if it's something you want to put in the oven after defrosting it's worth freezing in a foil take-away style container.

I let stuff cool before freezing as it then takes less energy to freeze so if vaguely more eco-friendly. You should defrost throroughly before heating.
