How old would a carrot have to be for you to reject it for soup?

Nigel Slater says, your soup is as good as your ingredients....
But my m and sis use more aged vegetables than I do and they laugh at me!

If I had doubts I'd taste it - if it tastes odd, it's not going to help your soup.

I would go by feel, if it's soft and bendy, it's not going in. Often peeling it helps you get an idea of how soup-able it is.

I detest throwing veg out so much, as long as it has not gone squidgy or mouldy I would soup it Smile

Its not so much the age of the carrot - it's the amount of fur growing on it that matters.

Soup is a great way to use up carrots that have gone a bit old and bendy. If it's too bendy to peel - just wash it and chuck it in with the peel on.

I thought the whole point of soup was to use up your manky veg, woops Grin.

Frontier · 20/06/2014 15:44

As long as it's not actually rotting it goes in, although even then i would cut off the rotten bit and salvage as much as possible

WandaDoff · 20/06/2014 15:47

What Frontier said.

I throw carrots away when they start to go squishy. Agree with sinning that for me the whole point in soup is to use up unused veg!

mousmous · 20/06/2014 16:05

if they are slimey they are rejected, bendy and shrivelly is fine they call it vintage at masterched

love this thread, thanks,
I used two org carrots, quite bendy and added the rest of the veg in the fridge, celery, leeks, potatoes it was unbeLIEVably delicious, I think it's the Kallo chicken stock though...
