what do you mean by 'family recipe'

if you mean bog standard, simple to cook easy to eat stuff then I don't think you can go wrong with The Dinner Lady by Jeanette Orrey

anorak · 06/09/2006 09:39

How To Eat by Nigella Lawson.

Twiglett · 06/09/2006 09:39

this one .. don't mistake with Jamie Oliver's book .. its different and far better IMO

AnguaVonUberwald · 06/09/2006 09:40

There is a recipie book called something like "400 easy receipies with 4 ingredients or less". We bought that as we are not the greatest cooks in the world and the recipies are easy to make and really tasty. Let me know if you are interested and I will get the actual details for you.

I've been looking at the dinner lady but haven't ordered it, I might do that now. I do have How to Eat but it's in the UK at the moment, I will bring it back with me when I go back this month.

Twiglett I want traditional family recipes that the whole family can enjoy. DD is 3 and eats really well, DS 13months and can no join in family meals rather than preparing seperate food. I really enjoy cooking and want a couple of really good recipe books. I have Jamies and they are good but just wondered what every one else liked to use. I can get myself stuck in a rut sometimes - you know same old thing!

What I really want to do is organise a weekly meal planner, this is my first step!

Someone is selling Nora's Dinners secondhand on the MN sale pages, Look here

I love Rose Prince and the New English Kitchen its very different to standard cookery books in that its all about eating well and economically every day using fresh sustainble good quality food. Lots of ideas for family meals and good ideas for leftovers! Other than that its got to be Delia's complete cookery course for me! Like Nigella too.

Medulla · 06/09/2006 09:59

Holidaymum that looks really good! I am going to order it with The Dinner Lady, thanks everyone, really appreciated you help

Great glad to help! Its changed the way we eat and shop loads, I now have rice and lentils in the fridge for quick meals we do a big roast at the weekend and get three meals out of it and I bake most of our bread which is easier than it appears! Food bill easily down by a third and foods healthier too.

Wow, I'm impressed now I want to be like you The only problem I have is the food out here (Cyprus) isn't as great as I expected but I do have access to the butchers and a small grocers and need to get in the habit of going there rather than the greek supermarket

Holidaymum · 06/09/2006 10:11

Thats all you need though! I love shopping in Greece and Cyprus you have much better veg than here and the meat is good too!

Orlando · 06/09/2006 10:11

I like The Dinner Lady too, and How to Eat both excellent. I've also just discovered Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's Family Cookbook definitely worth a look.

Holidaymum · 06/09/2006 10:12

And halloumi and lountza and good bread and nice pitta

Enid · 06/09/2006 10:13

old ones are the best although the new jane clarke one looks good

I use How to Eat by nigella more than any otehr cookbook and also the four seasons cookbook by margeret costa

Enid · 06/09/2006 10:13

the sweets recipies in that Hugh family book are good

Medulla · 06/09/2006 10:15

Nice pitta, good hoummous, I try to avoid halloumi (although it is scrummy!) I think the quality of the veg is not that great especially at our supermarket. I miss Sainsburys! Never thought I would say that

Tamasin's Kitchen Bible by Tamasin Day-Lewis is supposed to be brilliant if you just want to use one book. it's on amazon for half price (£12.50)

winnie · 06/09/2006 10:40

I agree with Orlando The River Cottage Family Cookbook

LieselVonTrapp · 06/09/2006 11:26

Ainsley Harriets Three Ingredient recipes. Good for people on a budget.
