I was looking at [http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00FQKCSAY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?ref_=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_t this]]

Do they taste any good?I would mostly use it for home made chips which I currently do in the oven but to get them taste nice I find I still have to use more oil than I'd like to...

ILs bought us one - it's crap. I persevered with the 'tumble dried' chips for a while but we all far preferred oven baked wedges or plain old oven chips. It makes the potatoes disintegrate into crumbs and the chips just don't taste that great. As to the suggestion that you'd want to cook sausages or anything else in it - why would you really? Takes just as long if not longer and it's a big, noisy unnecessary bit of kit cluttering up your kitchen. Totally pointless. Now lives in our garage as we occasionally have to retrieve it and put it in kitchen to save ILs delicate feelings...

Sorry missed your reply - ours is an Actifry

I love mine! Uses little fat so I don't feel guilty giving the kids chips regularly. I like them thin (like French fries) & they come out a bit crispy. Agree the machine is big & noisy though so if pushed for space maybe not.

Thanks all.still unsure now whether to go for it !

I have the Philips one and it's great. I use it for cooking oven chips, fish fingers etc, sausages and sometimes pastries like sausage rolls. Oven chips don't compare to cooking them in the air fryer.

That one looks good too. Do you use it for home made oven chips? I mostly want it for chips or roast potatoes cut fresh from potatoes, I do the latter at least once a week.

I love my actifry. It makes delicious chips, but you do have to use the right potatoes. I find maris piper or roosters best.

orangepudding · 06/06/2014 11:24

I've never used fresh potatoes in it.

GoAndAskDaddy · 06/06/2014 14:00

Always use fresh potatoes in my Actifry....DH is a potato farmer so have them by the shedful & not allowed to buy potatoes of any kind!

ouryve · 06/06/2014 14:01

Oooh, what varieties does he have, Go?

I'm fussy about my spuds.

Love my actifry, I think we've had one for about 7 years, the small one at first and then 2 years ago after the first one died due to over-use, we bought the family one.

Chips taste different depending on the potato and the oil you use. I love ours and use a chipping machine to make fries and chips, I also hand cut fatter chips and wedges.

I put baby potatoes, cut in half, into the actifry. It makes them all squishy, the skins all shrivel but I love them with salmon and spinach.

I peel and cut potatoes for roast potatoes too. The rinsing off the starch and patting them dry does make a huge difference.

I have also put oven chips in it when I have no potatoes. Taste fine.

In fact I have been known to harp on about it, make people curious and then invited them round for some chips! Blush

ContentedSidewinder · 07/06/2014 21:09

Sorry should have said, I use maris piper, roosters and sainsbury's bog standard white potatoes.

We use the actifry once a week for oven chips. We never put fat in, they come out lovely and crispy on the outside by soft on the inside. We use also for home made. The problem with the actifry is that because it has a stirring action if you try to use it for any breaded items it tends to knock the coating off. Also we tend to throw the parts in the dishwasher and because they are plastic it has made some of the plastic connections snap off.

We do love it but I think when we replace it we might replace it with the Philips version which is non stirring and the part that needs cleaning is metal. I do know though that some posters on here prefer the actifry as they use it to make chillis and bolognaises and don't have to stir them. I suppose it is good for that reason as well.
