When people say they eat a lot of 'nuts', which nuts are they talking about? And when are they eating them?

Nuts are good for you so I keep hearing.

But what nuts? And when? Do you just grab a handful and munch away? How many do you have to eat for them to be 'good for you'?

I usually do lose weight when I'm eating a lot of nuts and seeds. So long as you're using them to replace packets of crisps and mid afternoon slices of toast, the calorie content is a bit of a red herring.

MyNewNormal · 20/05/2014 21:12

Yes I lost weight still eating nuts though I had to weigh out a correct portion and note down the calories. I found they filled me up, making me eat less overall.

These days I need to put on weight so am thinking an easy way of doing this is snack liberally on them, especially macadamias.

Well I do need to replace the evening snacking and the afternoon toast Blush

How much should I be weighing out for one snack?

Sainsbury's do boxes of 5 30g packets of nuts - much more expensive but already weighed out so less easy to eat too big a portion.

I low carb and eat a lot of Brazils and Macadamias. Sometimes for pudding I'll have some berries with cream and some ground almonds on top.

I love nuts but it's amazing how they vary carb-wise!

Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium.
I think its five a day for the recommended "dose"....or it might be six.

There used to he one brand where the lackey was just right for a weeks worth. But possibly not if they're eaten all at once!

This thread is lovely! Can someone shed light on which nuts cause higher cholesterol...DH needs to avoid them.

Am assuming no one mentioned pumpkin/sunflower seeds coz they are not 'nuts'? Grin

I have a nut section in my cupboard and in it today: hazelnuts, almonds, pecans, redskin peanuts and walnuts.

The pecans will be gone by tomorrow as I'll be finishing the pack later. I eat them in front of the TV. I mix them in with muesli too.

I've been told that they are very fattening. I don't eat a huge amount at any one time, I bloody love them. I'm happy to know they are good for you.
I wish they were cheaper. That lot in my cupboard cost around £10.
I eat a v small bowlful of them Freedom.. I made the mistake of taking a whole pack whilst watching TV. and then they were all gone...Oops.

Thanks CorusKate! Getting DH into any kind of habit is painful. He and 'regular' are planets apart. Nevertheless I shall try to get some nuts into him after having read this thread...Smile
