oh well done you! was it easy?

the hedgerows here are FULL of blackberries and I was thinking I might try, then again Asda is only 2 miles away

Lio · 29/08/2006 19:36

Hmmm, I ate some jam today...

nikkie · 29/08/2006 19:51

Much easier than I thought actually ,
Now want to do plum jam , do weigh them with the stones in?

Well done you . I made some with blackcurrants from the garden a couple of weeks ago. Very good at impressing my workmates at tea time! Just waiting on my apples to be ready to see what I will do with them

gigglinggoblin · 29/08/2006 19:54

well done nickie! assume without stones, but not sure sorry.

i did blackberry jelly last year. got a blister from pushing the fruit through a sieve but was def worth it. unsieved jam is easy peasy and utterly delish. asda cannot compete with my grans home made jam

jollyfolly · 29/08/2006 20:02

i picked blackberrys from the garden the other day in order to try and make some jam.... left them soaking in water for a few hours and then found lots of wiggly wormy type things in the water afterwards!... coulnd'nt bring myself to make it after that, next time i might make black currant jam or something that it harder for the wigglies to hide in!

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 29/08/2006 20:46

I made gooseberry (I froze them when they were in the garden) and elderberry jam last week

Felt well accomplished.

Plum jam...... you can do it without stones if you use jam sugar, if you can't be arsed though you can leave in the stones then remove at the end: stones have lots of natural pectin (setting agent).

Have borrowed a copy of Domestic Goddess now, and this weekend am amking:

for us: flapjacks, spinach and sausage pie

for the carnival club cake stall (if anyone's in Ilminster this weekend... no? Didn't think so LOL): banana muffins; snickers and peanut butter muffins; flapjacks; macaroons; chocolate and orange cake; millionaires shortbread; fairy cakes (OK, the last one is the kids)

Have I got the bug d'ya think? LOl

(Mum's a harvest home- make your own chutney type, MIL is a professional sugarcrafter type person- I ahve a lot to live up to)

nikkie · 29/08/2006 21:25

Have found an old recipe book of my Mams with plum and apple jam in (perfect as I have masses of both!) it says 3 lb of each then gives instructions to peel & core/ destone so that must be weighed with I guess?
Thsi book is fab has every jam, chutney etc you could think of!

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 29/08/2006 21:37

Bramble jelly melted down over ice cream... mmmmmm

MegaLegs · 29/08/2006 21:38

Took the kids for a walk last week and grabbed a tupperware box on the way out the backdoor in case we found any blackberries. Returned 3 hours later and made 6 jars of jam. Yummy.

MarsLady · 29/08/2006 21:40

My mum made Marrow and Ginger jam this year and it's FAB! Now she's on to Blackberry....me, I just eat it on my toast.

nikkie · 29/08/2006 22:03

laundrylover · 29/08/2006 22:51

Try it - what else are marrows good for??? Just overweight courgettes IMO.

twinsetandpearls · 29/08/2006 23:02

We went blackberry picking while camping in the lakes and took the home to make a pie. When I asked dd what the best part of our holiday was she said "picking blackberries". She told her "aunty" at nursery today "When I grow up I am going to be a fruit picker"

laundrylover · 30/08/2006 10:51

Twinset. My DD1 loves picking blackberries too but they never make it to the container!! It's easy doing long walks at this time of year as the blackberries keep her going - she walked over 2 miles last week to a park! She is 2.6!!!
