What nice things to put on kebabs?

Was going to make some chicken or beef kababs for dinner(on sticks),(our friends are coming sat and have no kida, and we have a toddler, so wanted something easy to have prepared in fridge to shove in once lo is asleep). Was going to do rice too.

Any ideas of really nice rice? Ideas for kebab bits to use, apart form the usual onions, mushrooms etc.

Also does anyone know what cheese this is; we had it at friends once on a bbq, and it was lovely, they cut it into oval shapes and bbq it and it was quite rubbery, but nice, and didnt melt. If anyone knows the cheese, can this also be used on the kebabs??

I think that could've been halloumi cheese, and yes you can use it on kebabs!

It was probably halloumi which you could use like these.

I tend to go for pure meat kebabs.

Think veg ones are a bit 1970s wife swapping....

Chicken-marinade of honey, lemon, olive oil and thyme

Beef-marinade of ginger,garlic and tamarind

Pork-marinade of ginger, garlic, chilli and cumin, served with satay sauce, which is nicest at room temp.

I think rice is best plain,as long as it is Basmati.

thats definitely halloumi -its delicious on kebabs with mushrooms, peppers, onions etc

You can also do it in the oven on a tray with Mediterranean roast veg

chiken in a marinade of cumin, plain youghurt, tumeric, teeny bit of cayenne, garlic, salt and pepper.

(I've never been associated with 1970s wife swapping before -must be that pampas grass in the front garden !)

lol
Imagine them served with something weird involing gelatine, tinned mandarine segments and a mould.

don't forget your parsley sprigs. OOh and a pineapple ring with a cocktail cherry in the centre

TooTicky · 29/08/2006 18:41

...dipped in fondue...

we
prefer to have all the same thing on a skewer - all chicken or all peppers or all mushrooms etc. as the cooking times vary.

tehn decant them all into a big dish and let people help themselves

we had a lovely marinade the other day on beggie kebabs - it was tesco Finest tomato and Piri piri salad dressing - put it on the kebabs and left in fridge overnight to marinate and it was gorgeous the next day - sort of sweet but spicey as well.

Also have done halloumi cheese too

Accompaniment would be called something like 'Herby rice surprise'

Hi mindermummy,
i wouldn't risk it if i were you. As you know soft cheese like brie, camenbert etc,you have to steer clear, As for halloumi cheese i am not so sure as it contains a different milk. I am not 100% certain, check with your doctor or midwife just to be safe. As Halloumi comes from out this way (i am in the middle east)the women stay away from it when they are pregnant.

Kelly1978 · 31/08/2006 14:51

halloumi or paneer. they are pretty much the same. and i wouldn't worry abt pg, I ate paneer allt he way thru pg. can't see any reason to stay away.

fishie · 31/08/2006 14:53

i should think halloumi is fine to eat - it is only mould-ripened rind which you need to avoid here is useful info.
