Sugar and health

I found this article interesting. I agree with the sentiments but for those with less knowledge about nutrition, I think she should have elaborated more about the type of sugar found in sweets and that which occurs naturally in food like fruits. Her comment that she was rigid in that her children had no sugar, imo, is erroneous because I will hazard a guess that they ate fruit. IMO, sugar itself is not bad but the quantities one consumes - just like most things.

As well as baking cakes and biscuits, I also buy them. However, we eat them in moderation. We are healthy (DH runs half marathons and I do 10ks) and the boys love most fruit, carrots and broccoli. They don't have sugar on their cereal or in their tea either.

I'd rather the boys eat real sugar rather than things containing artificial sweetners. I don't agree with totally banning sweets because I don't want the boys to lust after them and develop an unhealthy obsession for them. The only sweets I have given them to date is chocolate and they get that once a week. However, if someone bought them some, I would let them have it. I do draw the line at fizzy drinks and that I will stop them having as long as I can. I do let them drink original ribena and orange squash but it is very diluted and they still happily drink water.
