Dont usually buy them as I have a fish allergy but ds was asking for fish so bought him a pack of 100% cod fish fingers which he loved and so did dd. So are they bad for them?

I think fish fingers are alright they're 100 per cent cod and no real nasties. Tell A. to enjoy , why aren't you on msn are you appearing offline like me?

Blossomhill · 25/08/2006 21:51

Well I think as long as you buy the cod fillets they are actually ok.

Wouldn't touch anything that just said fish or the really cheap ones.

Birds eye are usually pretty good.

I do them with mash and peas, quite healthy IMO

Also as long as they aren't having breaded products too often I think now and again is fine!

lol ledodgy am actually toying with idea of going to bed hence not signed in.

blossomhill I did it with mash and spaghetti and both littlies loved them. I dont do the breaded bits much so just wondered.

I always take the bread coating off

Cod is horribly endangered. I know some brands of fishfinger say they're sustainably fished, but I think it's best avoided.

I feel about this quite strongly, actually.

I'm with MI on this
I have recently started buying Birds eye haddock ff which are lovely and quite reasonable in their ingredients

Mercy · 26/08/2006 19:34

Was about to bang on about how great fishfingers are until I saw MI's and Katymacs's posts. Hmmmmm, good point - need to have a rethink then.

Katymac · 26/08/2006 19:37

My brother (who knows about stuff like this cos he lives in Sweden...they are more aware - somehow???) says that our grandchildren are unlikely to taste cod they have been so over fished

We really need to take a stand (climbs carefully off her box)

Nemo1977 · 26/08/2006 20:06

Will bear that in mind next time I go to buy them.

I hadn't thought about the ethics of cod either, will look out for the haddock ones. My kids also love goujons of lemon sole (from the fish counter in Tescos), which are really just posh fishfingers. I saw big cook little cook too and was very pleased to see there was no dodgy mushing up and forming into convenient shapes a la chicken nuggets.

Depends on your perosnal priorities. mine are in order:
Getting DS (17 mo) fed (a big challange)
Giving DS food he can learn to eat himself
Getting DS fed a reasonably healthy diet
Not getting into a fight over mealtimes
Not spending too much cash
Ethics of food

So fishfingers work for me! Cos of No.3 I don't give him breaded things more than 3 times a week (fishfingers, vegetable fingers) I also do lots of steamed courgette which he adores plus fruit pieces on the days we have fishfingers and baked beans!

you can get fish fingers from birdseye which aren't cod. i get the battered ones for dd and she loves them
