How to make healthy meat balls? I need to make meat balls as healthy as possible. I do meatballs with lots of finely chopped onions, and add milk soaked white bread. I think it was from some tv cooking programme. How do you make yours??

i alwasay think the best way to make healthy meatballs is to eat fewer of them - the fat is what makes em imo. mmm meatballs.

I roll up mince into balls and pour a tin of tomatoes over it.

I just use turkey mince, paprika and various seasonings depending what is in the cupboard. Give them a mash together, make them small, shallow fry then pop in a my own sauce - two tins of good quality tomatoes, chopped onion, tin of mixed beans, mushrooms.

Very healthy and low fat. DH and kids loved it.

extra lean mince, mixed with beaten egg, finely chopped onions, rolled into balls, grill then simmer in some passata.

I always make meatballs with a lean mince with pureed caramelised onions and anchovy sauce to flavour if for LO's (add loads of milled pepper and paprika if for human consumption ) but I use wholemeal breadcrumbs with milk to required consistency. In my mind this is healthier than white bread but that's just me (and if I had white bread that needed using up I would use that instead in all honesty)
Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes on a rack to allow any fat to drain.

serah and sc: go on, next time try them with non-lean mince, or, better still, with half beef and half pork (as in belly or shoulder of pork) mince. you'll never look back!

SenoraPostrophe · 25/08/2006 22:07

pureed caremelised onions sound nice though.

SpaceCadet · 25/08/2006 22:14

id love to SP but am following slimming world, so lean meat all the way, guess i could use, lean pork mince and lean beef mince though.

SenoraPostrophe · 25/08/2006 22:16

or have 3 instead of 4?

Serah · 25/08/2006 22:20

Lol SP. I have a batch of fatter mince meatballs in the freezer as we speak. Not so keen personally. I tend to think it is in the seasoning mi'sen.....

SpaceCadet · 25/08/2006 22:21

or maybe just 2!

Serah · 25/08/2006 22:24

Oh SC.. shame on you. 6 meatballs consisting of lean beef mince, wholemeal breadcrumbs and loads of seasoning is fine. Senora is tainted by spanish food. (I would like to report she is a porker, but I know she is not)

Serah · 25/08/2006 22:25

PS.. how big are your meatballs?

SenoraPostrophe · 25/08/2006 22:31

erm - bigger than golf balls and smaller than tennis balls.

it's the healthy mediterranean diet you see: fish, olive oil, tomatoes and truckloads of pork products.

PS I am in fact the size of a tank though!

Serah · 25/08/2006 22:34

My god!!! My meatballs are much smaller than a ping pong ball! See why you would recommend two now. I know you are porky in terms of belly-mass, but you forget I saw you at Nottingham castle a little over a year ago and would best describe you as a rake (2 or 3 meatball eating aside ...)

SenoraPostrophe · 25/08/2006 22:37

i was underweight then i admit. i have made up for it now though.

Serah · 25/08/2006 22:42

Have another meatball (and get your webcam on....)

divamummy · 25/08/2006 22:46

lol@u2
