Chocolate Fountain - A Quick Question

Hi, has anyone had any experience with Chocolate fountains at home? We are getting ready to test ours soon..mmmm.. and just seen in the instruction manual as well as the obvious choccie we are meant to add 3/4 of a cup of vegetable oil sounds pretty horrible but this is to get the right consistancy.

Can anyone think of a better substitute than vegetable oil, maybe some kind of nut oil or something that isnt highly flavoured?

Also, if anyone has been anywhere and tried something aside from the norm i.e marshmallows let us know, thanks.

I have a chocolate fountain - it's fab. No I don't put vegetable oil in mine for the reasons you say. Whenever I order my chocolate over the internet I order a powder to go with it to add, does the same thing as the oil, an emulsifier. Are you using normal chocolate? I think using a nut based oil would be a much better idea than vegetable - have fun. We dip fruit - strawberries, bananas, kiwi as well as marshmellows and biscuits too!

Ooh, where do you order yours from Medulla? Dh bought one for my 40th birthday party last weekend but we lost the instructions and the chocolate was really thick (didn't add any oil). The kids didn't seem to mind though!

Medulla · 24/08/2006 17:30

Actually it was my mum who orderd it for me. She's on line now so hang on a sec and I'll get the details for you

mummyplonk · 24/08/2006 17:34

Thanks Medulla, we've bought 15 bars of Belgian Chocolate, probably a bit excessive but we dont really know how much we need. It is high in Cocoa content which is apparently good. The powder sounds interesting though.

We have a chocolate fountain and the first time we used it we put the vegetable oil in as instructed to.
Thought it was a bit gross to do this but you don't really taste it.
i then bought some proper fountain chocolate from the Ideal World tv shopping channel this was lovely but expensive.
Then we tried some Galaxy chocolate and it tasted great and was loads cheaper.

We dip, strawberries, banana, marshmallow, fudge and anything else the kids decide they want to try.

Flumpybumpy · 25/08/2006 08:30

I got my fountain last year and we use Galaxy chocolate. You really can't taste the veg oil, I promise. You do need it though as the choc is too thick and doesn't flow otherwise.

We tried marshmallows, strawberries, grapes (really nice), fudge, raspberries (heaven), coconut ice (like mini Bountys) and pears.

mummyplonk · 25/08/2006 09:38

am getting some great ideas here, thanks everyone, cocunut ice...grapes..banana, my mouth is watering already. Do you all throw the excess chocholate away or could you pop it in the fridge and use it again do you think? We have got about 20 people coming round for my brothers homecoming party from Australia do you think 15 big bars is enough in your experience?

You might find the choc goes a bit yucky if you try to keep it as it has got the oil in. We didn't keep it because I didn't like the thought of keeping something that everyone had been dipping into, but that's just me

Sugarpop · 25/08/2006 10:06

Would cream work instead of veg oil? It would taste nicer surely?

mummyplonk · 25/08/2006 10:21

That might be worth a try SugarPop, yes your right FlumpyBumpy even though it is all family I am sure there will be droppages and fingers going in it as well, didnt account for all of the mess either. Might be an idea to get the baby mess mat down, or do it in the garden!

We always throw any left over away.
15 big bars would be enough for the whole street mummyplonk.
What are you trying to do to them, give them a sugar overdose!!!!!!
Mind you saying that, it does depend on what size fountain you have.
Mine has 3 levels and i've got 4 bars of galaxy for 15 of the family that will be here tomorrow... Mmmmmmm, Yum, Can't wait for them to arrive.
Haven't tried grapes yet, so will try them.
