Ideas healthy eating with hungry OH

I always plan means before doing the food shop. I want to eat fairly healthy and trying to budget too but OH is never happy. Say I decide to do a salad, boiled egg, new pot, crusty bread, coleslaw/pot salad, bit of ham etc and he wants, double the amount of bread with pate, pork pie, quiche and everything to go with it. We had an easy dinner last night of oven chicken, savoury rice and beans but this wasn't enough he wanted a tray of wedges with it..... Someone please give me some ideas of something that will keep him happy and full but not add money on top of EVERY meal I plan :(

Does he eat enough throughout the day? snack on fruit etc? It may be by the evening meal he is too hungry and so over eating. I would go to the market/grocers and get lots of fresh (and cheap) fruit and veg for snacks.
Does he like pasta? This is usually a very filling option (better to get the wholewheat version). A decent portion with some protein should be adequate.

Cut out/down the carbs, up the protein and fat. This will keep him feeling fuller for longer.

It's difficult to tell from the examples you give whether either of you are being unreasonable about things.

I'd want more than a boiled egg and a bit of ham with a salad, and I generally offer unlimited bread. If people are hungry, they are hungry.

What sort of portions are you cooking with the chicken and rice thing?

Does he have any say the food planning?

His plates are full, I mean like stacked up. He doesn't eat breakfast but never has.
He is 'trying to loose weight' so he has a milkshake for lunch as a meal replacement but he has been doing this for 3 months (his idea) and keeps "saying cut my dinner portions down" yet he isn't loosing weight. So is obviously snacking at work, because for the job he is in, if he was only having coffee, shake meal replacement and what I give him for dinner, he would be loosing it quick.
It's built up more from things he does like texting to say he is busy at work so won't have time to come home for lunch (we live 100m from his work) then when I say "did you manage to get anything for lunch today" he says yeah we got a mcdonalds/subway in. So obviously had time to eat so made the decision not to come home for milkshakes.
Or will have his milkshake at home then hide a pack of crisps in his pocket and shove loads of biscuits in then says oh just going for a wee before I go back, and I can see him chewing. This is what makes me annoyed because he goes on about loosing weight but obviously isn't sticking to it and when I cut his portions like he asks of me, I get moaned at.

His salads consist of lettuce, olives, 2 boiled eggs, 3/4 of a tin of new potatoes, a whole tub of coleslaw and 1/2 the potato salad (one of those split tubs) 3/4 slices of ham and at least 4/5 slices of bread covered in pate.
His dinner last night was two chicken breast covered in spicy bread crumbs, half plate of savoury rice and 3/4 tin of beans, then followed by two microwave puddings and HALF A LARGE CARTON OF CUSTARD...... Is it really me being unfair? Am I missing something here :(

That seems a lot unless he has a really manual job?

Get him to watch Secret Eaters on 4od. Eye opening stuff Shock

Harri20 · 24/04/2014 14:41

He does, he works moving and cutting a lot of heavy metal etc but he is over weight and not losing on this meal replacement thing so is getting more calories than he needs from somewhere???

Crikey, two chicken breasts is a lot - I was feeling a bit sorry for him from your first post Grin

You say you are trying to budget, but Slimfast type things, Subway, McDonalds etc. are not cheap, so I guess your husband isn't fully on board with that side of things either?

Still, he's a grown man, he knows he won't lose weight if he eats too much.

The milkshakes are a bit pointless, he needs to eat actual food if he's working in a manual job, just maybe spread it out a bit so he isn't starving at night. Perhaps take one of the chicken breasts for lunch!

There seems to be a lot of food but little veg and fresh items. Ie tin new potatoes?? What are they?

Those ready made coldslaws and potato salads at basically 50% mayo. Not great to be eating whole tubs at a time

Breaded chicken - carbs
Rice - carbs
Beans - carbs

If you swapped for:
Chicken breast ( add herbs/ spices as required)
Brown rice
X3 types veg

He needs to eat breakfast and lunch as body probably going into starvation mode of storing fat etc as its not sure when it will get food next.

BIWI · 24/04/2014 21:52

Too many carbs! Cut out the bread, potatoes, rice, crisps, pasta, sugar - up the protein and fat. Honestly. He will feel much more satisfied and won't be so hungry.

And make sure he's drinking plenty of water as well. Often hunger is misinterpreted as thirst.

Blueuggboots · 24/04/2014 21:56

He's trying to lose weight???? No he's not, he's SAYING he's trying to lose weight. There's a big difference!

pregnantpause · 25/04/2014 11:22

I want to lose weight. But I'm eating chocolate and having sausage sandwiches for lunch so I'm not trying to lose weight. Neither is your dh. Stop feeling responsible for his choices. He's been over eating for seemingly a long time . When he decides to lose weight he is likely to feel hungry for a while whilst his stomach shrinks to a normal size. Your meals can be as healthy as you like, if he's snacking on biscuits (80cals each for non chocolate ones) and crisps (250 cals a bag for mccoys) then your fighting a losing battle. I would suggest he starts by eating his normal, giant portions at meals and stop snacking, once he's achieved that, start lowering portions, upping the protein. And cut out the milkshakes, they serve no purpose, perhaps a hearty soup and two rolls for lunch would sustain him. But real food is always better.
