We have got 3 trees full of apples and we need ideas to use them.
Preferably things that will keep (freeze/jars) as my parents are away for 2 weeks and dd2 and I have been ill and aren't eating much

I have a recipe for spiced apple chutney that I could find

think it's nigella's

I tend to freeze them in batches to make into crumbles and the like

apple custard, stewed apple, apple strudel

apple pies freeze really well - just wrap and freeze the whole thing uncooked.

or you could make up a big batch of apple puree for use in various deserts and apple sauce (eg add several spoons of apple puree to a cake mix or put it in the bottom of the tin so you have a sort of apple treacle pud.

also cider. and keep some spare for cooking: you can add apples to loads of things: coleslaw, carrot mash?

Glad I saw this because I have FIVE apple trees all bursting at the seams. i was about to post a related question so hopefully someone here can help - I've just made two apple and rhubarb crumbles - one to eat and one to freeze. Should I cook the one to freeze first and then freeze or should i freeze it uncooked?

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 21/08/2006 20:29

i think crumbles are usually cooked first, don't know if it is essential tho.

Mum makes a lovely preserve from apples and rosehips, make as per normal fruit jelly (ie like jam then strain through muslin). Delicate, and is a lovely gift too.

ooh apple cake yum

tassis · 21/08/2006 20:53

I stew the apples and then freeze for crumbles or make up crumble and then freeze before cooking it (but then i invariable want to use the dish that the crumble's in for something else).

we have an apple tree but the apples are as big as grapes. can you apple tree growers explain what i can do to help the tree.

EmmyLou · 21/08/2006 21:45

nicnack - did your tree have 'the June drop'? I think fruit trees are meant to shed about a third of their fruit around then to allow the remaining fruit to grow to a decent size...?

Apple muffins are great and freeze well too.

nicnack2 · 22/08/2006 18:39

emmylou. No just tiny apples
