Full Fat Milk

Thomcat · 17/03/2004 13:40

Just dawned on me that I am still giving Lottie full fat milk at breakfast and before bed. Should I drop to semi-skimmed?

The hospital did talk about me 'fattening' her up becasue she's such a diddy doll but she has a slightly under (?, or was it over)active thyroid, incresased TCH levels or something.

She's very small though, about 2 stone and she's 2years 3months. Shall I just keep on with full fat or not do you reckon?

Think they have full fat till they are at school or later? I think...

nutcracker · 17/03/2004 13:45

I thought they were supposed to have full fat until 5 years old. We all drink full fat in our house anyway.

Coddy · 17/03/2004 13:45

I love full f at milk - I only have one portion my crerals a day (drinks have black) so I indulge myself.

Think there may be more calcuim in it..

ex colleague had teenager with Downs and she said that weight was an issue with her daughter - is that the case across the borad (but obvnot with L),TC?

Thomcat · 17/03/2004 13:52

Coddy - yes people with DS have a tendancy to be a bit over weight later in life due to thyroid problems mostly. It's also a fact that they are mostly shorter than average.

I'll keep on with full fat then, I had the idea in my head that after 2 you stopped full fat milk??? Don't know where I got that info.

TC I'm with you actually. Sure I've read that you stop full fat at 2.

Bozza · 17/03/2004 14:02

I think I read and acted on guidelines that said full fat until 2. Then because DS has always been a good eater and reasonable weight I changed over to semi. TBH he only has milk on cereal these days anyway. Still buy him full fat yoghurts though.

2 stone doesn't sound too light for that age but if you think she could do with fattening up keep her on full-fat.

Thomcat · 17/03/2004 14:10

okay, as long as full fat isn't doing her any harm think I'll keep on with it till we next get her weighed at the hospital and I know that she isn't massively under weight for her age or anything.

thanks

I think small children need relatively high fat food. Just keep on with it. And I also think a lot of the reason some people with DS end up overweight is that they are allowed to eat badly as their 'only pleasure' which clearly isn't the case with your lovely daughter!

Ladeeda · 17/03/2004 16:24

i always thought kids could eat and drink whatever they wanted (except booze), including full-fat, until they are about puberty. As long as they are getting proper amounts of exercise. Semi-skimmed has more calcium though.

Thomcat · 17/03/2004 16:56

Is has more calcium does it, that's interesting I didn't know that.

hmmmm, now thinking full fat - morning, semi skimmed - evening.
I do like to over complicate things

The advise is no Semi or skimmed (milk, cheese or yogurt) until after 2 (or else) but if you can keep them on FF til 5 that would be great (as I understand it)

Furball · 17/03/2004 20:40

We changed DS (2.7) onto semi a few months back. We found that the full fat was 'catching' in his throat and making him cough?

mears · 17/03/2004 21:26

No need to change from full fat milk unless you want to. Inever did and my eldest is 17yrs old

Guidance is full fat till 2 years, semi skimmed till 5yrs. Skimmed onwards if you want.

soothepoo · 17/03/2004 21:53

Even full fat milk is only 4% fat (or 96% fat free!!!), so is a lot less fatty than a lot of other foods marketed as "low fat". Skimmed milk has the most calcium, but there is not much in it.
DD has whole milk all the time, dh and I have skimmed, except at weekends when we treat ourselves to cereal with whole milk.
We lead such a rock and roll lifestyle .

aloha · 17/03/2004 22:26

I put ds on semi-skimmed at 2 as that is what we have and prefer - and also he is a butterball

Janh · 17/03/2004 22:59

"Full fat until 2" just means don't switch to semi-skimmed until then at the earliest.

School milk is full fat (I think) and they get that until 7.

elliott · 18/03/2004 12:46

I switched ds1 to semiskimmed jsut after he was two, mainly because I love full fat and it was too tempting having it around the house! Also he drinks a lot of milk and I was a bit worried it would be putting him off his food.

marialuisa · 18/03/2004 14:06

DD has just turned 3 and has been having fully-skimmed milk since she was around 15 months. TBH I think so long as they eat a balanced diet they'll be ok, certainly DD is in no danger of "museli belt malnutrition"She won't drink milk at school because it's full-fat, she described it as "too thick in my mouth", as a convert to skimmed I know exactly what she means!

Easy · 18/03/2004 14:28

Can I just point out that "full fat" milk still only has 4% fat, which makes it a low fat food compared to most other things.

I think that unless lottie is drinking gallons and gallons of milk a day, the difference between full fat and semi-skimmed is negligible. And I don't think you should try to go to skimmed yet (if ever), cos children need some fats for continued brain and soft tissue development.

Incidentally, if I need to lose some weight, I stick to a low fat diet, eating nothing more that 4% fat. It allows me to have milk, and it does work (can have good chocolate , the 80% cocoa stuff, too). You have to read stuff carefully in the supermarket tho'

Easy · 18/03/2004 14:31

sorry, missed soothepoo's post, said the same didn't I !

TW · 21/03/2004 12:40

I was just about to start more or less exactly the same thread - so is the conclusion here that you shouldn't change your children from full-fat milk, unless you feel they specifically need to reduce their fat intake (or find it too "sticky", and certainly not before the age of 2.?
My 3 are 5,3, and almost 2, and I have always had them all on F/F, basically because I wasn't going to have them all on different colours. However, the little one is 2 next month and I have been wondering, SHOULD I change now. There is not an ounce of fat on any of them, they lead a very active lifestyle, so my conclusion from all this thread is to stay as we are.
Correct?
PS wink unintentional!

zebra · 21/03/2004 12:56

I think you've correctly summarised the majority view, TW.

HiddenSpirit · 21/03/2004 14:01

TW you don't NEED to change milk. I personally still give all my 3 full fat milk as it has more energy than semi-skimmed. To me it's a bit early to start the "diet" fad. They are running about a lot more than when they were under 2, so to me they need the extra energy.

I have always been told by HV's (in both Scotland & England when I moved here) that you should not give semi-skimmed/skimmed milk to a child until they are at least 5 years old.

MrsGrump · 21/03/2004 14:06

DH (age 30-3months)is neurotic about only having fullfat for himself.
