baby food for an 8 year old?!?!

My poor son can't eat anything that's not absolutely soft and mushy - ideally that can be drunk from a glass. Help!

Both his front teeth got knocked out yesterday and are now splinted in tenuously in the hopes that they'll reattach. The dentist said to not use them at all - no straws, no chewing (in case he accidentally knocks his front teeth) and he had trouble with even a spoon yesterday as his top lip is still swollen and he can't get the food off.

Normally he's got a great appetite, eats like a horse and seems to need all the food - he's quite slim. What should I feed him? What about those protein shakes? (I'm in the US if that matters product-wise.)

arggghhh. He's had milkshakes for dinner and breakfast so far.. Any and all advice welcomed. Thanks!

How about lots of smoothies for sweet things (fruit, yoghurt etc).

Soup for main meals. You could add loads of veg, beans and even meat. Then puree it until smooth.

That should give him the nutrients he needs to keep him going and can be drunk without the aid of a straw.

oh no poor chap How about veg and fruit juice smoothies - they can be pretty filling - or as Ilana suggested soups.

Could he eat pudding? Those instant pudding cups are gross, but at least high calorie. And applesauce is easy to get.

Poor guy, send him my love. How'd he knock them out?

If you make fruit smoothie add oatbran to it as this bulks it up a bit and he'll feel fuller for longer.
Make a stew and liquidise it.

Poor thing hope he's ok soon.

Thanks for all the suggestions - they're well appreciated.

We'll do a combination of all of them - smoothies, shakes, soups, desserts and applesauce/pureed fruit. It's great to have so many ideas as we'll be doing this for a while and I don't want him to get too bored with it. We did get Ensure (a protein drink with vitamins and minerals) for him as well after my dad talked to the pharmacist - don't know if they had Herbalife, but it's the same type of thing.

NQC, my dad was tossing a baseball with him (not hard) and he caught the ball just so with his teeth and they popped out. Lever + place to stand = move world type thing. He'd gotten hit in the same place a few years ago by the shoe of a girl on a swing (just an accident - no one's fault) so they were probably not as stable as they might have been although no major damage was noted at the time.

fussymummy - cross-posted! Thanks. We did that today with oatmeal (erm whole porridge oats, I think) and I have to remember to do it with more of his slurries. Might just have some softened in a bit of water in the fridge to add to things? Would that work? Or I could use milk - but would that spoil too quickly?

God, poor DS1.

Other good hi-cal things:

  • coconut milk. Can go in drinks, smoothies, whatever.
  • cream etc
  • you can get protein powders from health food stores/weight lifting places. Whey powder etc. I suspect they taste like, well, rubbish, but they're at least high cal and fluid.
