Long grain rice - why is it all Easy Cook now?

Does anyone know? The only place that I can find large bags of regular long grain rice is Tesco. Sainsbury's is all Easy Cook. It looks and tastes different. There is loads of Basmati of both types. I can find small bags in Waitrose and Morrisons but it works out much more expensive.

Anyone?

I know - it's a real pain as the kids won't eat easy cook. I don't like it much either. Sainsbury's basics rice is still long grain, but only comes in small bags. It's quite starchy too - gets very sticky very quickly. I probably should rinse it first Grin
When I looked in Tesco, they didn't have any, so I shall have to look again.

What's the difference? I don't even know what I've got in my cupboard, it's Asdas own brand!!

Easy gook is like you get in microwave ready meals - the grains always stay hard and separate. Long grain goes soft and fluffy or clumpy if cooked too long

I agree with you about Easy Cook, it's not that nice. We always use basmati, which is just a different type of long grain rice. It's more expensive, but we buy a huge bag of it from our local Chinese cash'n'carry & it works out much cheaper that way. It's less starchy & sticky than the standard long grain rice.

I think Basmati us best, fluffy and separate grainx but nit mushy.

TyneTeas · 17/03/2014 22:00

agree - actually takes longer to cook and not as nice : (

How large is large? Waitrose do a 1kg bag for £1.50?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 18/03/2014 07:18

I think it's a simple question of demand. Basmati is extremely popular because it's better quality and produces good results. Easy-cook is popular because it's cheaper & long grain so often ends up disgustingly starchy. Long grain is out of favour so the on-shelf offer reflects that.

I thinlk some "long grain" rice can be very variable in quality, some varieties are nice and fluffy, but others are too starchy and start to go sticky before the grain is cooked though. I tend to use either basmati or easy cook for a stir fry, it doesn't break up. We also love white and wild rice both ASDA and TESCO do it, a lovely nutty flavour .

I just buy basmati

tb · 18/03/2014 16:58

You could always get a sack from an asian grocer, or Costco.

ShoeWhore · 20/03/2014 12:56

I always use basmati too, I find it much better.

The easy cook stuff is just odd isn't it?
