Hi,

Im trying to get to the bottom of DD's tantrums. She is 2.2yrs. I thought it may be a good idea to look at what shes eating as ive noticed that after some sweets she does get hyper.
Im new to all this so I dont know exactly what I should be looking for ie the ones that are most likely to cause problems.
Is anyone able to help?

Actually just read an article about this yesterday in FamilyCircle.
It was about a trial with identical twins where one was fed an aditive packed diet while the other ate no additives. They did IQ tests before and after and the child with the 'good' diet improved by 25% while the other only by 10%. Mother said he was also better behaved, could concentrait for longer and listen to instruction without throwing a wobbler. Dont think it is as magic as all that but def seems to have an impact.

It said that The soil association had also done a test on 4 additives and found that a combination of the four can lead to damage to the developing nervous system and brain!! The four are:
E133 Brilliant Blue FCF - used in many sweets, soft drinks and deserts
E104 Quinoline Yellow - used in sweets, scotch eggs and smoked haddock
E621 Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) - a flavour enhacer used in crisps, some processed cheeses and ready meals
E951 Aspartame - used in thousands of diet drinks and food.

Also mentions:
E102 Tartrazine - can cause hyperactivity and allergic reactions
E110 Sunset yellow FCF - Can cause allergies, hyperactivity, kidney tumours
E122 Azorubine, Carmoisine - Proven to cause temper tantrums
E123 Amaranth - Can provoke asthma, eczema and hyperactivity
E210 Benzoic acid- shown to provoke hyperactivity in children

It amazes me that they can put all this junk in kids food and get away with it. Some of these additives are banned in other counties but not here! Very scary as sometimes they are named and sometimes they just give the E number so hard to figure out whats what. Hope that helps
