When did your child stop using spouted cups? And what did you use instead for taking drinks out and about?

DD1 is 2 1/2 and I'm thinking it's about time she gave up lidded cups. She uses an open cup at mealtimes (though she still sometimes pours it everywhere), but I take a spillproof cup of water when we go out, and she has her morning and bedtime milk from a spouted (non-spillproof) cup.

Ideally I need something that doesn't spill easily to take out with us - a sport-top bottle maybe?

When did your children stop using lidded cups anyway? She doesn't seem to like the idea of milk from an open cup, especially at bedtime when she normally wanders about with it ...

We use sport bottle top types of cups although they can spill when they have been used a bit. I think ds2 must have been around your dd's age.

cece · 09/08/2006 21:23

DD who is 5 still has her milk at bedtime in lidded cup! Looks horrified if I suggest she stop.

DS who is 2 and 3/4 has same as your DD.

When we go out they both have sports style cups/lids of varying types.

franch since ds was around 2.5yrs I used sports valve type cups when out and make him have a open cup at home. Apart from his drink of milk at bed time where he has a beaker just in case he spills it.

Indeed, ds3is only 23 months and for a while now has a sports type bottle (mainly because he wants what the older two have, granted) and if out and about I can just buy him a carton as he can 'do' straws too. I don't bother that much about taking drinks out now, even for ds3 as I can just buy a bottle of water with a spout top or a carton.

cece - glad my DS is not the only one

We use sports beakers for out and about

SusanD · 09/08/2006 21:31

Only 2.5 and tring to stop beakers? I had no trouble getting DD1 to stop bottles at one year old but it took reaching her fourth birthday and me leaving her beaker at my in-laws place hundreds of miles away (twice) to stop it altogether. Also bought a disney princess cup for her to have her evening milk out of....maybe a special cup would help. Was really annoying as new had no trouble at nursery with cups and would have juice and water at meal times at home from a cup but liked breakfast milk and bedtime story milk from her beaker. whilst out and about how about a sports water bottle? If you use them she'll probably want to, otherwise cartons of juice, just take the first swig yourself to avoid the immediate grab/spill senario.

Does it really matter? It does save on spills and it's not like they just continualy gulp down a huge amount of milk from a beaker in the same way as a bottle. But on the other hand good for eating out if they cope with an open cup so no help there then!

DS1 (2y 4m) has a lidded non-spill cup most of the time. He can drink from a handled mug or kids glass too. I usually take a sports type bottle when out and about. If you switch cups for bed-time (DS1 takes a drink to bed) check the spillability of it. The Tommee Tippee KOTG sports bottle has a 'glug' to it, so it very satisifying to pour all over a cot!!! I tend to buy DS1 special sports cups for him, but he will happily drink from 'mummy's bottle' which is just a normal water bottle with a spout - handy for emergencies.

franch · 09/08/2006 22:09

Thanks all. So which sport-top bottles are least spillable?

And what do you mean by an ordinary bottle with spout Laura?

Does anyone's kids have an open cup at bedtime?!

And what are you on about cod?

Sorry - I meant a sports bottle top that some of the waters have. Those tend to leak less than the TT KOTG cup that DS has. I don't worry about leakage potential for out and about - he's either drinking out of it, or I shut it so it doesn't spill. The only spillages we get are in the car, but he only has water, so it's not the end of the world.

alexw · 10/08/2006 13:50

DD stopped spouted lidded cups at 18 months. She uses TT cup with hole in (can also haev straw in hole).

franch · 10/08/2006 14:35

How do you transport that kind of cup alex? DD1 also takes a drink to bed - not sure it would work for that?

I use one of these for my kids it is non spill and they don't think they have babyish cups any more!
they are 2 & 4 btw

jellyjelly · 10/08/2006 22:05

I have a tupperware style contianer with just a lid on, have used it for ages now and it is called the apple juice cup and ds looks like i am mad when i put soup in it.

alexw · 11/08/2006 08:26

I don't transport it. When we're out she drinks from sports bottle or ordinary cup depending on where we are. I am a bit phobic about cups/bottles/dummies so was very keen to get rid of all 'baby' stuff.
