Steak Diane

nemno · 24/02/2014 22:25

Duck a l'orange
Trout with Almonds

LottieJenkins · 24/02/2014 22:27

Chicken Supreme

TinyTwoTears · 24/02/2014 22:27

Beef stroganoff with rice or noodles.

Much as I lurve a fondue I wouldn't do it with a starter and dessert.

Your dessert sounds delish!

LizzieVereker · 24/02/2014 22:27

Rump steak and chips. Or scampi in a basket.

Black forest roulade sounds lovely - coud I be cheeky and ask where you foud the recipe, please?

NigellasDealer · 24/02/2014 22:27

chicken kiev recipe here

Stockhausen · 24/02/2014 22:29

Is it wrong, that I'd be delighted with 90% of this thread!? Grin

Steak Dianne.... can smell the brandy wafting from the kitchen, my mum brandishing a mallet... cos you had to bash all meat into submission back then... Grin

Fishandjam · 24/02/2014 22:29

This thread is making me HUNGRY.

ExcuseTypos · 24/02/2014 22:30

I often cook Steak Diane on a Saturday night, if we're in.

It's yummyGrin

Bunbaker · 24/02/2014 22:31

A Vesta curry Grin

I don't think roulade was commonplace in the 70s, but the Black Forest gateau certainly was.

Looking at my Marguerite Patten recipe book circa 1974 here are some classics:
Chicken aspic mould
Cold cheese soufflé
Veal or chicken fricasse
Beef stroganoff
Crown roast of lamb (with the little chef hats on)
Goulash
Steak and kidney pudding
Another aspic classic - Ham and chicken mould
Chicken Maryland

And whatever you do be sure to serve it with Duchesse potatoes

TinyTwoTears · 24/02/2014 22:32

That's it, I am buying a baguette and having one of the fondue packs from lidl that I have in the fridge for dinner tomorrow.

Followed by a chicken Kiev.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

oakmouse · 24/02/2014 22:32

Sardine curry (ever so economical!)

Wickeddevil · 24/02/2014 22:33

Thank You.

LOL at crispy pancakes / vesta curry / kraft meal. Though DH would be happy Grin

Thought about coq au vin do you think it would be too rich with 2 other courses though? I would normally just serve with crusty bread.

Never done duck a lorange.... That could work, also liking boeuf Borg, as I could leave in the slow cooker and open the black tower.

Steak Diane, chicken Kiev, fondue all good suggestions too. Also like arctic roll as alternative dessert...

Thanks all think I will look up the duck first.

I should not change technology. Ever.

I was going to say that moussaka was considered very sophisticated back then. So was lasagne!

ExcuseTypos · 24/02/2014 22:35

I think duck would be good with that pudding.

Oh I've just thought of something. You MUST serve a small glass of orange juice from a carton as pre starter!

And olives, from a tin and peanuts for nibbles.

Wickeddevil · 24/02/2014 22:36

Lizzie the roulade is Mary Berry's chocolate roulade with cream and a bag of defrosted black Forrest fruits. It's yummy and you can make it in advance.

BrianTheMole · 24/02/2014 22:36

Toad in the hole.

ExcuseTypos · 24/02/2014 22:36

oak I think you're going a bit far with the sardine curryGrin

Wickeddevil · 24/02/2014 22:37

Would that orange juice need a glacé cherry on a stick excuse?

OP posts:
ExcuseTypos · 24/02/2014 22:48

Yes!

gandalfcat · 24/02/2014 22:53

Don't forget matchmakers and after eights with the liqueur coffees (a la berni floaters) after!

Admiraltea · 24/02/2014 22:57

Co-incidence.... Chicken Maryland..... taught my kids how to cook it this weekend from 1989 Sunday Times amazing coffee table cook book. Also their corn fritters, was v cheap and posh KFC alternative but I don't remember my mum ever cooking it in the 1970's

Fondue is for a fondue party, ditto raclette. Had a meat fondue in Bruges last year and was great fun for sharing but not Abigail's Party posh.

1970's would def be good choices with steak or coq au vin or duck a l'orange.

Crepes Suzette possibly for a show off ending?
That and Black Forest roulade will polish them off.

Very definitely you must have butter curls, get a funny wibbly edged spoon thing, drag across slightly soft butter then put the curls in a dish in the fridge to go rock hard.

You serve them with warm rolls that are put on the table in a sort of bizarre multi pocketed fabric daisy flower thing.

You also need napkin rings, a silver plated candelabra and decanters for everything.

Start the meal with sherry, though for true authenticity you should have decanted it for Christmas and left the remainders on the drinks trolley since.

I can do a full list of all drinks regularly drunk at which points of the evening, very bizarre combinations, would prob be better off with a fish bowl and some straws.

(disclaimer was at primary school at end of 70's and used to nick butter curls out of the fridge.)

Marcipex · 24/02/2014 22:58

Chicken Maryland or moussaka.
And strawberry shortcake possibly?

And don't forget the Schloer and the Liebfraumilch.

BoffinMum · 24/02/2014 23:01

Steak, fat chips, mushrooms, onion rings and tomatoes.

sleepyhead · 24/02/2014 23:02

Baked ham covered with pineapple rings and glace cherries.

Thusly.
