Is it worth buying a slowcooker?

Just wondering really. I keep hearing that they're great but doesn't just bubbling away on the hob do the same thing? On the other hand I obviously wouldn't leave the hob on when out of the house. Is it safe to leave the slowcooker on?
What sort of things do you make in yours?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm just wondering if its worth taking the plunge or not!

If I do, which cost effective (cheap ish) slowcooker do you recommend?

Thanks!

I agree with Funky - the remoska is great.

I do have a slow cooker but don't use it much, find stews etc are far too 'watery' even though I add very little liquid. I usually end up finishing things on the hob which rather defeats the object Grin.

I love mine. I make casseroles mainly. And soups. And I recently made a rice pudding. It's really useful. The key to avoid watery is to add little to no liquid. You don't really believe that it's no liquid but it is. And season with a slightly heavier hand.

Nkf what kind of soup do you make in your slow cooker? I make soup on the hob - it takes minutes, I'm intrigued.

I make French onion soup. I think it tastes better if you get the onions to soften very very slowly in butter. And I make soup with lentils and also with one with yellow split peas. They could all be done on the hob, but I don't anymore.

I love our SC, but alternate SC meals with oven cooked to break things up. We tend to do 2-day meals in the SC like chilli or sausage and bean casserole for work days. Very convenient and time saving Smile
