RICE is it ok to freeze and reheat.?

I am going to be a supermum and pre cook some meals for dd 17months.
She really likes rice with mixed veg and various sauces/meat thrown in.
Can I make up the rice(basmati) and veg in advance and keep it in the freezer? I am sure I read/heard that rice can be dangerous if not reheated properly.
Does anybody know whats what?
Thanks

Yes you can. You do need to be careful to cool it quickly as you can get toxins from warm rice hanging around. You can BUY frozen rice for heavens sake! Am crap at gauging how much I'll need so tend to deliberately cook too much now and freeze the rest.

You can but you have to be really, really careful to reheat it properly. I have a vague recollection of reading something that said the toxins in frozen rice that wasn't reheated properly was worse than those in meat.

will be fine - cool quickly then freeze straight away
reheat till properly hot all the way through.

I'm not organised enough to freeze it - I stick in fridge and reheat for lunch or dinner the next day.

I would also say No.

It's hte way the rice ie stored that can cause a problem. Rice can contain a bateria called bacillus cereus, when you cook rice this is not necessarily killed, if the rice is then left at room temperature (the bacillus multiplies and they produce toxins which make you ill. So, as long as you cool the rice quickly, freeze it and ensure that when you reheat it it is piping hot you should be ok. As has been said - you can buy frozen rice! Hope this helps

[microbiologist hat on]
Rice can give you really nasty food poisoning if it hangs about not piping hot but not cold. 'Cook - fast chill - freeze - reheat properly' should be fine.

The bacteria involved is Bacillus cereus, and the Health Protection Agency website has this to say:

Transmission:
Contaminated cooked foods subjected to inadequate post-cooking temperature control during cooling and storage, mainly rice dishes.

[hat off]

I know you're just being cautious though Fio

Thank you, now I know what I'm up against I can make sure I get the rice chilled and frozen asap.

I know you can buy kids meals containing rice. My dd loves them, hence the idea of wanting to produce my own which I'm sure I can do for less than £1.70 a meal!!
Thanks again
