Lucky you. You could egg and breadcrumb thin slices and fry (for a very short time, you don't want rubber) and serve with lemon. Or, fry some onions until golden and soft, flour thin slices of liver, fry these and keep warm on a place then add to the pan a little chicken stock, some butter and some marsala (or other fortified wine, or even a little brandy) and boil it up (or in posh parlance "reduce it") into a nice sauce.

Yeah, I've a great one. Find a dog who has been a very well-behaved, obedient canine. Give him the calf liver as a treat. He will love you.

YellowFeathers · 04/08/2006 15:48

I only know the liver and bacon with onions and gravy. Very boring!

magnolia1 · 04/08/2006 15:50

A black bag wrapped loosley and put in the bin??? Sorry can't stand liver!!

MamaG · 04/08/2006 15:50

ROFL expat

YellowFeathers · 04/08/2006 15:52

just think of all that iron

expatinscotland · 04/08/2006 15:58

Yes, magnolia! Dogs need iron, too!

So do maggots and worms. So instead of wrapping it in a black bag and putting in the bin, maybe leave the bag off so the flies can get to it easier. Or, if you're a lentil-weaver, compost it in a wormery.

YellowFeathers · 04/08/2006 15:59

lol

Carmenere · 04/08/2006 16:01

Toss it in seasoned flour, sear it in a really hot pan, remove and keep warm. Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar, add some fresh sage leaves and freshly cracked black pepper, serve with sauteed potatoes.

magnolia1 · 04/08/2006 16:02

Tut someone had to give a recipe!!! Why would you want liver UUUURRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

Carmenere · 04/08/2006 16:04

Well actually I'm thinking of going out and getting some for dinner tomorrow night now so nah

expatinscotland · 04/08/2006 16:05

magnolia1 · 04/08/2006 16:06

Weirdo's

SminkoPinko · 04/08/2006 16:06

Carmenere · 04/08/2006 16:07

I like fava beans and Chianti

magnolia1 · 04/08/2006 16:07

And you know it's calves not cows?? So a bubby cow had to killed to get it

zippitippitoes · 04/08/2006 16:15

thank you..I did think it might be greeted with the same enthusiasm as dp had for it!

Think I have enough to try more than one idea as it is just for me

For some reason i have been craving it since not having it for about 20 years

The calf would have probably have been killed anyway, magnolia. Don't they get calves liver from boy calves no good to a dairy herd or summat? So zippi would have had to turn vegan if she'd wanted to save his life. And if we all turned vegan then there would be no demand for cows and they'd all be culled and become extinct. At least he lived a little and long enough to provide zippi with a delicious dinner or two. (Actually that's probably a load crap but please enjoy your tea zips!)

zippitippitoes · 04/08/2006 17:00

I think this suggestds that I'm better eating british calf liver than letting it be exported for growing into French veal here

OP posts:
SminkoPinko · 04/08/2006 17:03

You are clearly being positively magnanimous in eating it, zippi.

magnolia1 · 04/08/2006 17:18

Lol, I am only joking by the way. Not nearly a veggie here. Love my meat just not liver

zippitippitoes · 04/08/2006 18:50

yum was delicious

yes i thought you were being tongue in cheek..but i did have a feeling that some people might be a bit anti..did check out the likely welfare of the poor thing before ordering myself

I used to do calves liver in a tomato sauce. coat with seasoned flour and fry in butter. Add tomatoes, garlic and italian herbs, possibly onions and mushrooms too. It's a long time since i've cooked it and i've lost the recipe but i'm sure that was basically it.
