Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Octopus37 · 07/02/2014 14:26

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

Today (in addition to my breakfast) have eaten (bear in mind was at my DS's party)

2 very small chicken nuggets
2 fish fingers
Some cashewnuts
Some birthday cake

Not great I know but could have been worse. Dinner is going to be roast chicken, roast potatos with veg. Have bought no added sugar peanut butter for breakfast, hope I like it will start tomorrow.

I'm inspired by everyone's good eating, can I join?

Today I had-
Whole meal toast with marmite and avocado
2 apples
Handful of sugar snap peas
Some chips at the seaside( not many though as generally don't like)
Roast chicken dinner with cheesy leeks, roasted red onions, lemon and garlic.

Am hungover to hell and need to have a detox week coming up!

Coumarin · 09/02/2014 18:31

I wouldn't have thought of putting marmite with avocado nil
I don't like it but will try it out on DH.

Can sugar and palm oil free peanut butter be bought from a regular supermarket?
My town is quite hippified so I'm sure one of the many health food type places will have it but at £££ price.

TawdryTatou · 09/02/2014 18:47

Today - B -two fried eggs, two slices gluten free toast and butter.

L - red and white quinoa with spring onion, red pepper, coriander, lemon juice.

D - roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, green beans, peas, roast potatoes, gluten free Yorkshire pud, homemade gravy.

Honey roast rhubarb and Greek yoghurt.

2tiredtocare · 09/02/2014 18:53

Here's mine

B: bowl of S wheats with raisins and cup of green tea
L: beef, 2 roast pots and brocolli at Carvery
D: bowl of greek yog with seeds, strawberry, pineapple and pear and a kitkat
And about 4 more green teas

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 09/02/2014 19:01

Octopus - can I recommend Lidl's Full Fat Greek Yog? It's absolutely delicious and I think its about 1.60 for a kg (so a whopping great bucket). It's very low in sugar and v. creamy. I add a handful of blueberries and/or seeds and it makes a lovely breakfast. And no horrid sugar or additives like in low fat yogs.
Something else that I find has helped is keeping bags of frozen berries/fruit in the freezer and I then just get out what I need - it's cheaper than fresh and there's no wastage.

nilbyname · 09/02/2014 19:34

coumarin it is the food of the gods! avocado is so good with anything salty. My kids love it sliced with soy sauce on top, as do I with a sprinkling of roasted seeds.

Can I also recommend some snacks-
Edamame (soya beans, get them in the freezer section) with salt and chilli flakes
Olives with feta
Chunks of tomato with torn basil, oil and salt and pepper
Greek yoghurt raita with crudités.

2tiredtocare · 09/02/2014 20:24

Avocado weirdly goes really well with oranges too

Sunshine200 · 09/02/2014 20:55

Hi, count me in.
No way am I admitting to what I've eaten today (typing as I tuck into a giant bag of Minstrels!), but tomorrow I will be good, and will post then. Have already got some healthy ideas from reading this thread, and inspiration.

Coumarin · 09/02/2014 21:27

Thanks Nil soy sauce with it sounds lovely. I have two avocados ripening up ready for use in salads and things so I'll try it.

Where are you all buying the sugar/palm oil free peanut butter?

My favourite one from Booths is full of palm oil unfortunately and I'd like to swop it for a better alternative.

Coumarin · 09/02/2014 21:28

I fell asleep earlier this evening. I didn't sleep very well last night side spite being exhausted. I actually dreamt about malteasers. Blush

There's a huge bag of them in the cupboard downstairs but I'm resisting.

Coumarin · 09/02/2014 21:29

*in spite of

Sleepwhenidie · 09/02/2014 21:36

Meridian do organic nut butters, nothing added Coumarin. I get it from Ocado but think they are in most big supermarkets.

nikkihollis · 09/02/2014 21:55

I did really well today. Buuuut had two muffins tonight. Just to test them because the rest of them are for friends' tomorrow. And to be honest they tasted a bit too sweet. Which is definitely a good sign!

Coumarin dreaming about maltesers :) Oh dear!

Sleepwhenidie · 09/02/2014 21:57

Nikki, what food was 'really well'? Smile

EddieReadersglasses · 09/02/2014 21:59

Great thread! Just wondering if all Greek yoghurt has sugar? I'm eating asda full fat one, didn't seem to have anything extra eg sugar but tastes v different to total full fat one, which is definitely less sweet. I don't have a lidl nearby to try their one

Coumarin · 09/02/2014 22:04

Greek yogurt is just milk isn't it?

I know Nikki I'm a disgrace. Grin At least I feel like I've eaten them now, the dream was quite vivid.

Sleep Ocado don't deliver to my neck of the woods. I'll look in Booths tomorrow.

frugalfuzzpig · 09/02/2014 22:05

I always keep my bread in the freezer now. When we moved out of my parents' I found it was going mouldy because only I eat it (DH is coeliac) and I've just kept the habit. DCs only really eat bread on weekends anyway as they're on free school meals at the moment.

Ordered a grocery delivery tomorrow. Got DD involved in choosing the fruit and veg (she wanted to help write the list) and she chose lots of lovely stuff. She's pretty good with eating veg really, her little brother is a bit fussier although still gets plenty (just less variety)

Lots of meals I'm planning to try making in the near future although I have to pace myself and not expect too much. Am really tired this evening, all I did was go out for lunch (my friend who I haven't seen for ages wanted to treat us :)) but I'm struggling a bit healthwise having had flu a couple of weeks back. I am really excited about trying more meals again though.

Funnily enough my friend was saying she wants to learn to cook more meals and rely on oven type stuff less. I want to learn to bake and she does that a lot so we are going to teach each other!

We are having a rare day trip in half term with her and her DH, we've agreed to take a picnic - any suggestions for portable healthy and child friendly picnic food? Especially gluten free for DH...

frugalfuzzpig · 09/02/2014 22:13

Ooh I searched 'meridian' on the tesco app and while peanut butter didn't appear, they have cashew and almond butters. I might try that next time.

I'd actually just ordered peanut butter (unsweetened) as I want to try making satay. Damn, I should've got more celery - it's amazing with peanut butter :o

Sleepwhenidie · 09/02/2014 22:21

Frugal I'd do things like frittata, roast chicken, popcorn, cheese, raw veg, olives, fruit, smoked salmon and cream cheese if the kids like that? Some lovely home made cake?

Re ideas for meals.....Tonight DH and I had smoked salmon with avocado, small slice of oaty bread and butter, then steak with stuffed mushrooms (ratatouille and cheese on top), broccoli and roast tomatoes.

Tomorrow I may do smoked haddock gratin, steam a bag of spinach and pop it in a roasting dish, add fish fillet and some cherry tomatoes. Mix up a few tbsps of creme fraiche with chopped spring onion, squeeze of lemon, black pepper, some grated cheese and blob it all over the fish and tomatoes, top with a slice of bread broken into breadcrumbs and pop in the oven for 20-25 mins. Nice with lentils (I use the ready made sachets for convenience) and green veg.

Roast chicken with baked sweet potato and veg is a big favourite here.

Seared tuna steak with stir fried veg is great. Noodles/rice if you want.

I make thai hot and sour soup quite often, chicken stock with chopped garlic, chilli, ginger, bit of sugar and lime juice, also fish sauce, soy sauce and rice vinegar. Then throw in veg like green beans, red pepper, carrot, spinach, pak choi, spring onions, little broccoli florets (a bag of stir fry veg is handy for this). Thicken at the last minute with a couple of whisked eggs and include baked salmon, or prawns, or chicken. Noodles also optional.

Slow roast shoulder of lamb baked with cannellini beans and veg is good, more green veg on the side.

Any of those sound useful frugal?

Sleepwhenidie · 09/02/2014 22:22

Cashew and almond better for you than peanut if you like them Smile

frugalfuzzpig · 09/02/2014 22:34

Thanks sleep I'll get planning :o

My favourite thing with baked sweet potato is crumbled feta and spring onions. Simple but amazing!

LoveSewingBee · 09/02/2014 22:44

We are trying to eat very healthily as Dutch processed food is truly full of crap and lots of Dutch food is processed ...

However, I have noticed that healthy eating (at least for me) does not result in losing any weight at all (also don't gain weight) Sad

Today I have eaten:
Breakfast: small bowl with porridge (semi-skimmed milk, no sugar) with three fresh strawberries (here they grow special winter type strawberrie in the greenhouses which are actually quite sweet even now) with green tea.
Black coffee
Lunch: two very thin slices home made spelt bread with sliced tomato and cress and little salt and pepper plus large glass of water
Banana
Dinner: 2 boiled potatoes, generous portion of romanesco (cross between cauliflower and broccoli) and small piece of salmon cooked in oven with slice of lemon in baking foil with two glasses of water
Green tea (few cups, no sugar)
Tangerine

I really need to exercise more ....

LoveSewingBee · 09/02/2014 22:50

It is really easy to make your own peanut butter or any nut butter yourself and it will be much healthier I expect.

We make peanut butter using shelled unsalted peanuts, put them in food processor and let it go for 5-10 minutes. First it becomes dry and crumbly, DO NOT add any liquid just keep going, suddenly the oils in the nuts get released and it becomes silky smooth. Your whole kitchen will smell of peanut or other nut. I keep it in one of those old Nutella glasses with a plastic lid, but any glass with cling film will do. Don't put it in the fridge, just normal kitchen cupboard.

It really is very quick and easy!

Sleepwhenidie · 09/02/2014 22:56

Love that's not much food Sad! To me it sounds like a diet, rather than healthy eating. Are you doing this to try and lose weight? Do you need to? Don't you get starving hungry by the afternoon?

I'd go back to what I said before re getting protein and fat in the first half of the day, you appear to have neither and also not many calories. If you can try and do that for a couple of weeks, remembering to eat mindfully but putting the idea of weight loss out of your mind...you may feel more energetic and actually want to exercise. Even if you don't I can pretty much guarantee you will feel better generally Smile.
