Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Octopus37 · 07/02/2014 14:26

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

Today I've had

porridge, 1 slice of 50/50 toast with marmite.

Wafer thin chicken sandwich, lettuce, 4 cherry tomatoes, cucumber, hard boiled egg. Greek yoghurt with fresh mango

tea will be spag bol, after an hour at the gym.

Octopus37 · 13/02/2014 13:08

Not very well today, DH has done all the school stuff. Haven eaten:

2 slices of toast with no sugar peanut butter
2 Pieces of onion bread wit no sugar peanut butter
A small other piece of onion bread whilst waiting for it to toast.

Amazing don't want the chocolate which is in the fridge, which is progress. Aiming to eat some fruit this afterwards and have a spag bol for tea (although it is a ready meal) which I will eat with some salad.

Beech - what 'crap' food do you tend to eat?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/02/2014 13:44

I must've list some weight as when I was shopping my knickers kept slipping downGrin Grin Grin Grin need to lose a lot so this is good news.

Went out with a friend last night for an Indian-usually have a starter and main, so this time just had a main and no starter. I felt like I had 'choice' rather than stuffing my face like I normally do oh yes,I even went without naan bread. Didn't miss it and glad I didn't order it.

Breakfast today- Greek yog and half a banana and a few grapes.

Lunch-green salad, grated apple and carrot, celery, few roasted beans and 2x boiled eggs.

Not sure about tea yet, possibly turkey and veg...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/02/2014 14:37

Octopus-I bought all the Easter eggs yesterday, put them away and haven't been tempted either so far. Good for you, well doneSmile

Beechview · 13/02/2014 14:42

Sleep I'll eat anything when I want to overeat. Even dry cereal! I'm not particularly into anything specific though bread may come at the top of the list. But that might be because its so easily accessible and ready.

Sleepwhenidie · 13/02/2014 16:26

Beech - instead of having food you consider 'crap' or banned, how about trying to ban the 'off switch' that checks you out of the process of eating instead? So have whatever food you want (try considering nutrition first of course, but assuming you still want to eat the bread/whatever), then be present. So prepare a slice of bread and butter (or a small bowl of ice cream, or some pieces of chocolate...), put it on a plate, sit down, take a moment to relax, then eat it slowly, really taste it. Then, if you want more, repeat the process Smile. If you are going to eat then really eat, with all of your senses Smile.

Coumarin · 13/02/2014 18:20

Haven't eaten much today. Feel too exhausted to do anything. No idea what's for dinner either so probably will be something easy so I don't have to think too much about it. Crap day.

Octopus37 · 13/02/2014 19:07

Again haven't done very well today. In addition to what posted earlier, have eaten two dairy milks and some spag bol. TBH really don't fancy fruit or salad today, could be the bug I've got. Hoping to feel better tomorrow as really need to and will endeavour to eat better as well. At least I fancy toast with no sugar peanut butter, rather than something crappy for breakfast so maybe that's a start.

Don't beat yourself Octopus, when you are I'll you eat what you fancy

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/02/2014 19:23

You have to just get through the day octopus when you feel poorly Thanks

Sleep-definitely agree about 'bring present' when eating, that's really made a big difference to me. I never felt full, ever. This last month has been a massive change,I feel full and feel like I've eaten well and that my 'off' switch is working again.

Sleepwhenidie · 13/02/2014 22:41

Dame - LOL at your knickers falling down - you should watch that Wink. Did I mention I think its great that you aren't weighing yourself by the way?

Octopus and Coumarin - hope you feel better soon, take care of yourselves, don't be discouraged about what you eat or don't eat when you are ill, its not a usual state of affairs Smile. Octopus your breakfast is much better. Maybe - when you feel better - try the slow and present eating I describe above when you have your chocolate?

My day - slice of malt loaf with butter (a weakness of mine) before hot yoga, 2 poached eggs on buttered granary toast after. Greek yoghurt with blueberries and nuts a couple of hours after that. Lots of green tea. A small latte. Hot and sour soup with loads of veg, prawns and chicken, thai fishcakes on the side tonight oh - and a large glass of white wine.

From tomorrow the healthy eating will be awry, I am off skiing, a week of lots of cheese, crepes, cured meat, red wine and baguettes awaits Grin.

Coumarin · 13/02/2014 22:55

Thank you Sleep. Have a wonderful time. It sounds amazing. Smile

Octopus37 · 14/02/2014 07:00

Thank you, have just had my usual breakfast. Going on a spa day tomorrow and staying overnight with one of my friends (special treat), hoping that I feel better. Got some work to do today but might try and have a rest afterwards. Aim is just to eat some foods with some goodness in them and to do the same today.

Coumarin · 14/02/2014 07:54

Ooh I'm Envy of your spa day. Have a great time and relax.
Your plan sounds good, just eat what you can and enjoy it.

I did some more healthy food shopping yesterday. More of the same plus I found some 100% peanut butter and bought oatcakes to go with it. It's gorgeous! So much nicer than my usual kind. I also bought sesame seed butter thinking it might be slightly nutty and nice on rye bread. Wrong. It's utterly vile! Probably better used in cooking. It was expensive so I need to google recipes.

Clearing the gadget cupboard later so hopefully my juicer is in there. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Smile

Have a great Friday everyone.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/02/2014 08:43

sleep have a great time! :)

frugalfuzzpig · 14/02/2014 08:54

I never felt full, ever

I was similar. I would always clear my plate as it felt wasteful otherwise (especially if in a restaurant) and would eat 'treats'/dessert etc no matter what. I had two settings - 'eating for the sake of it' and 'overstuffed'. Pleasantly full/satisfied didn't exist.

It was my second pregnancy that changed it. DS took up so much room (he was nearly 12lbs at birth Hmm) that for the first time I literally couldn't fit in much food without feeling sick. So I finally learned how to eat properly and, although I wouldn't have called it that at the time, mindfully.

I now even leave food on my plate in a restaurant Shock it's still a waste if you eat it when you don't actually want it.

frugalfuzzpig · 14/02/2014 08:54

Have a great time on your trips sleep and octopus

CaptainHindsight · 14/02/2014 09:00

Nilby - Thank you so much for the recipe, it was gorgeous. DS was a bit Hmm at first but ended up finishing the leftovers.

I ate a pizza last night Blush. I have been working on my uni work flat out for days now and after a busy evening and a late night neither DH or I could be bothered to cook.

My knickers aren't looser but I have had a couple of compliments on my hair and skin recently so I'm hoping the goodness going in is starting to show on the outside.

Well done everyone for sticking with it.
Have a guilt free slice of Cake

Coumarin · 14/02/2014 09:06

DH has given me chocolates. If eat the ones with nuts in that counts as healthy eating right?
Plus calcium, antioxidants... Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/02/2014 09:27

I told dh not to buy me chocolates Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/02/2014 09:27

Yes yes, nuts count as healthy eating Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/02/2014 13:27

Breakfast - Greek you with half a banana and grapes. Tea with soya milk.

Lunch -4 multigrain crackers with smoked salmon and home made veg soup (parsnip, carrots, broccoli , peas, leek, potato, turkey stock) sounds an odd soup but it was delicious.

Tea will be gammon, cauliflower cheese and veg.

frugalfuzzpig · 14/02/2014 15:57

Out to lunch today for valentines :) we'd been planning to explore a nearby town for the first time but due to weather/lingering virus we decided to stick to our town. I really enjoyed it but didn't finish either course and resisted a dessert. In the past I would've got one no matter what but I felt full and didn't need it even though they looked nice. So it didn't actually feel like resisting.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/02/2014 16:19

I was like that the other day frugal when I went out - I was amazed at myself! Grin
