Are these as healthy as they look?

Have been happily munching on these for a few weeks now, and it's only just occured to me that they may not be as healthy as I first thought.

They are School Bars by FruitBowl. Website Here It won't let me link directly to the page but they're under products > schoolbars.

Thoughts on them?

I think these have sugar added IIRC also they are very chewy and will stick to teeth - a better alternative is probably humzingers which are just made from dried fruit and rice flour - still not the best for teeth but no added sugar and not as sticky as the school bars. HTH.

Just noticed that is is for yourself and not the kids - if so I would worry too much. Better for you than a mars bar.

Am glad they aren't too bad. I find that because they're not fresh fruit, they obviously keep longer which is great as I often tend to fancy fruit when I don't have any in, or its gone all icky from being forgotten about!

If they are the ones I'm thinking of I bought them once for DD and she said they were foul (the green ones) -I told her not to be so silly and kept putting them in for her mid-morning snack. They came home untouched

Eventually I tried one and it was, indeed, foul. Really waxy in texture and not a nice flavour. Admitedly it was only the green one we tried -maybe the others are OK.

(Sorry -I realise you didn't ask what we thought of them but thought I'd post anyway! ). If you like them, then carry on!

Betty to be perfectly honest, the first few times I had them I thought they were foul, but ate them cause they had to be eaten IYSWIM and suddenly found that I started to crave them. I think they are an aquired taste LOL

tbh its a bit difficult to tell as I cant find any link on that site which lists the actual ingredients in them - & that does make me rather suspicious

NutterlyUts · 03/08/2006 10:31

Ingredients from the back of the box of the Blackcurrent, Apple and Pear bars:

Concentrated Apple Puree (An average of 138g of Apple is used to prepare 100g of School Bars), Dehydrated Apple (22%), Sugar, Maltodextrin, Frucose-Glucose Syrup, Vegetable Oil, Concentrated Blackcurrent Juice (1.5%), Gelling Agent (Pectin), Natural Colour (Anthocyanins), Concentrated Pear Juice (1%), Malic Acid, Natural Flavoring, Preservative.

Hmm, not sure. I don't have any dried fruit in the house just now to look on the label to see what else they put in it, but I can't help but think that (eg)raisins or dried apricots might be a better option as they are a bit less processed than the bars. They keep for yonks and you could have a stash of them in the cupboard.

Anyone know?

NutterlyUts · 03/08/2006 11:02

I have dried apricots too, but they tend to bung me up

Hiya,

I'm a big fan of schoolbars - thought they were a bit of a "secret find"!! My kids love them, too, but you need to pick the right flavours (personally, I don't get on with apricot, but I know others that do love 'em!). For me it's like, better than a big bar of choccy, but not as boring as an apple!! If you're worried about sugar, a mate told me there's a new one out that doesn't have added sugar, but all fruit and dried fruit has natural sugar anyway. Have you tried Fruitenergy (or it might be fruit10ergy???)? Not sure if that's the same company. Feels a bit more "grown-up" and doesn't have added sugar.

redminilover · 06/09/2006 11:34

With regards to NutterlyUts original question about how healthy these school bars are, I think they must be good as they count towards the 5 a day and have no added sugar.

Havent tried fruitenergy bars yet, will look out for them if I remember! But I stumbled across another product from these people in Tesco - yogurt fruit flakes. Seriously good! Can recommend.
