Went to a kids do where they were asked to "please bring healthy lunch" I found it really interesting what people considered healthy and after discussion with other parents I was really suprised by their regular diet.
So:
Categories:
1.Give my child 1-2 times year or not at all
2.Give my child maybe once a month as a treat
3.Give my child weekly
4.Give my child daily

Food:
Muesli bars: oats, fruit, honey type (3)
Muesli bars: yoghurt/choc coated type (1)
Chips (2)
Sausage rolls or pies (1)
Lollies (1)
Dried fruit
Soda eg coke
Chocolate
Fish fingers (bought) (2)
Cookies (1)
Crackers and spread eg hummus/ marmite (3)
The ratings in brackets is what my family goes by how about yours?
BTW we took fruit kebabs to the get together.

what did others bring then?

yawningmonster · 03/08/2006 04:31

All of the foods on the list were at the do (as well as fruit, sandwiches etc but I was amazed how differently we all thought) eg
Lollies were homemade hard candies which admittedly did have less sugar than shop bought ones but it was still the main ingredient (and I didnt feel they qualified as healthy food). I feel ok about meusli bars but as is apparent others disagree strongly ditto I feel ok about dried fruit and others think it is evil. I felt that as it was stipulated the food should be healthy that meant food I would be happy ds had daily or at least weekly so took fruit kebabs (banana, watermelon, pear, kiwifruit and orange on a stick) I am not keen on sausage rolls, those mini sausages with red skins or fish fingers as part of his everyday diet and others were more than happy with these. I am not in any way criticising choices but found it interesting how differently we viewed the term "healthy" and what we were comfortable with.

this is going to end up one of those competitive threads that makes even the Oldies quake with shame at the junk they hurl at their kids to make their lives easier

Or is that just me?

yawningmonster · 03/08/2006 06:45

oh no I hope not, that is not my intention at all, just what I thought was healthy others didnt and vice versa, it was purely interesting to me is all, if you think it is going to kick off, I will happily ask techs to remove the thread.

It's interesting to see where these foods fit on a scale of healthiness - maybe it would be interesting to get people to put them in order from healthiest to least healthy?

Here's my list. I have DS1 (nearly 5) and DS2 (nearly 2)

Muesli bars: oats, fruit, honey type (2)
Muesli bars: yoghurt/choc coated type (1)
Chips (2 - generally chunky proper fresh ones from chip shop)
Sausage rolls or pies (2 (DS2 would live on these if he could))
Lollies (1 or never for DS1)
Dried fruit (3)
Soda eg coke (never)
Chocolate (2 for DS1, but dark good quality chocolate, not children's chocolate. never for DS2 atm)
Fish fingers (bought) (never - just don't like 'em. nothing against them really)
Cookies (2 or 3 for homemade, pretty much never for storebought)
Crackers and spread eg hummus/ marmite (3)

FanjoFanjoWhosGotTheFanjo · 03/08/2006 07:06

I think people are often proud of stuff they've made themselves, and try to bring it to events, even if it doesn't fit the specification of what you're meant to bring. (I brought Eton mess to a small picnic on Monday, and found that the only other kid who was there was egg-allergic, whoops. But we weren't sharing food, at least.)

Muesli bars: oats, fruit, honey type (3-4) - homemade flapjack
Muesli bars: yoghurt/choc coated type (1)
Chips (2)
Sausage rolls or pies (2-3)
Lollies (1)
Dried fruit (3)
Soda eg coke (1)
Chocolate (2-3)
Fish fingers (bought) (2)
Cookies (1-2) -biscuits ?
Crackers and spread eg hummus/ marmite (1-2)

This is a very small subset of their (our)total diet though.

hmm - fishfingers - at a party ? very odd ! Was there no fruit and veggies ? crisps ? Ham or cheese sandwiches ? They are all normal fair at parties I have been too recently.

throckenholt · 03/08/2006 08:31

oops - just read the rest of the thread and realised you mention those later.

It is interesting what other people consider healthy, and also what people take violent dislikes to.

The old adage - a little of everything, everything in moderation - seems like a sensible approach to me. Pretty much anything is bad for you if you eat too much of it, and at the other extreme a little bit of practically anything won't do much damage.

Bozza · 03/08/2006 08:57

muesli bars - oat,fruit etc - 1
museli bars - choc coated - 1
chips - 2
sausage rolls/pies - 2 (but sometimes make my own pies but for a meal not for a picnic)
lollies - 2
dried fruit - 4 (have it on their cereal)
soda - 1 (ie never)
chocolate - 3
fish fingers (bought) - 1
cookies - 3
crackers and spred - 2

yawningmonster · 03/08/2006 09:02

I totally agree,I try to give him a fairly healthy balanced diet but I am not anal about what ds eats . It seemed that people at the gathering were against certain ingredients so some would ban or limit sugar but were happy about fat and vice versa, some didnt like colourings but didnt mind fat/sugar if you see what I mean...it was really interesting. Some of the things my ds never has are because of intolerances eg chocolate rather than my food standards. Also people have different versions of food eg: fish fingers which are home made vs bought ones, same with cookies...also lollies, many people mention ice lollies which I assume is just frozen juice which I dont even consider to be a lolly at all.
