How Did You Notice Excessive Food Ponciness?

FanjoFanjoWhosGotTheFanjo · 31/07/2006 09:24

This morning I found myself grating a cinnamon stick into a salad dressing.

Because we are out of normal ground cinnamon.

Because I have fallen madly in love with Waitrose brand ground cinnamon (wouldn't think it would be different, totally is), which Ocado doesn't stock (!!). And DH keeps failing to buy it for me.

How can I fix this? Do I need to (ugh) eat McDonalds or something?

Quinoa is actually quite lovely. :-P

Quinoa can be very bitter if not rinsed well. And taste a bit like birdseed.

Caligula · 31/07/2006 16:02

LOL at all these. I noticed it the other day with some cranberry light which tasted horrible. I realised why, it's got aspartame in it. Vile

And salted butter. Or that crappy not butter but a yellow spread made of something else stuff. Yuk.

Support group needed for Uber-ponces?

expatinscotland · 31/07/2006 16:13

I'm proud to say neither of my DDs have ever had anything with aspartame in it.

That stuff is a carcinogen in addition to tasting vile.

Worse than MSG.

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 31/07/2006 16:15

Mrs Badger if I email you my address can you tell your dh to send any unsuitable wine my way next time he gets given any? I'll pay for postage

(and you think i'm joking)

FanjoFanjoWhosGotTheFanjo · 31/07/2006 17:39

We just use spare wine as barter. The DSes have had haircuts for bottles, before. But then, we don't really drink, but still get given loads.

I ended up grinding up some cinnamon sticks today, to solve the cinnamon problem. It seemed even better than preground ...

Expat, I seem to remember Nigella (on the tv show) pouring leftover wine out of used glasses to freeze and use later in cooking.

As you know I am a devout pluralist when it comes to food - feeding the family some supposed junk (such as odd MacDonalds, allowing them some sugary drinks etc) but mostly providing freshly cooked good food.

I tend to be scathing of overt fussiness (no, you don't say), regarding it as a little obsessive, not very constructive - and sometimes not polite - i.e. when receiving other's hospitality)

However I was horrified at the Gym bar today to find myself ordering dd a bottle of mineral water because suddenly I found myself impotent in the face of fruit shoot, and no longer able to order it . Alarmed that I have been unwittingly influenced......by Mumsnet....

GeorginaA · 31/07/2006 18:15

hmc - it's a slippery slope

SenoraPostrophe · 31/07/2006 18:31

lol at being a food pluralist. I'm one of those I think.

georgina: the trick is to make your own convenience foods. burgers and meatballs freeze well uncooked. the only problem is you might have to buy a second freezer.

GeorginaA · 31/07/2006 18:32

I do normally - but I'd run out and it was going to be a hectic week ... Not making that mistake again.

SminkoPinko · 31/07/2006 18:37

at anyone not routinely grinding their own cinnamon. You'll be drinking fruit shoots instead of blackcurrent presse next.

hotmama · 31/07/2006 18:41

Top tip from Nigella - I do this all the time or more to the point when there is any spare red wine - which isn't that often.

I pour it into a jug first and write on the freezer bag how many mls there is!

nikkie · 31/07/2006 19:39

I avoid the additives and use proper butter etc but out of the sake of my bank balance I don't go too poncy! (also not much of a cook )
Now unlimited money and a personal chef I might think differently!

FanjoFanjoWhosGotTheFanjo · 31/07/2006 19:59

I don't refuse unacceptable food at other people's houses. Ok, I might not eat as much as I would if the food was to my taste, but I wouldn't dream of asking "so, is this organic?" if someone was giving me a meal!

(But fresh-ground cinnamon was a lot better than pre-ground. And I probably do have to get a coffee grinder anyway (for this, and for substituting out eggs from things, etc etc))

Make my own stocks, soups and lemon curd. Can't eat shop bought desserts now cause the are soooo sweet, especially lemon meringues or cheesecakes

One of my proudest moments was when ds1 was offered the chance to dine at maccyd's and declined on the grounds that he wanted to eat proper food

FanjoFanjoWhosGotTheFanjo · 31/07/2006 20:20

Oh, DS1 refuses to eat cinema popcorn. Only homemade for him.

He doesn't yet know what McDonalds is, but he's not yet 5.

very poncey when it comes to loo roll.

and will cross the street to avoid anything with mystery spices in it.

also don't like birdseed, altho quinoa is fine.

bundle · 09/08/2006 18:50

fanjo, shall I get you some next time I'm in Waitrose? (tell me which it is though, don't want to get the wrong one, x)

bundle · 09/08/2006 18:51

btw am poncey about olives, bacon (has to be dry cured) and organic milk.

sprout · 10/08/2006 08:48

Fanjo, any chance of you posting your two salad recipes (Lebanese & quinoa)? Can't find any dressing that makes quinoa salad edible, but I'm willing to keep trying...
