Is it still called margarine? I'm looking for one that is spreadable, tastes like butter and not too unhealthy. Any suggestions are welcome.

I use butter. It is the healthiest and tastiest!

Failing that, I go for an Olive one, usually the shop own, but it is very rare.

HerBigChance · 18/01/2014 19:39

Butter. Always.

Sainsburys salted.

1919 · 18/01/2014 19:40

Kerrygold butter or one with sea salt crystals.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 18/01/2014 19:44

I use butter in a block. Marg is unhealthy untasty crap

mashyup · 18/01/2014 19:45

Lurpack spreadable, lighter but not lightest

schmalex · 18/01/2014 19:47

Butter tastes like butter and is not unhealthy!

owlbegoing · 18/01/2014 19:47

Whichever is on offer, I have no loyalty Smile

ilovepowerhoop · 18/01/2014 19:52

butter in a tub, whatever is on offer

zizzo · 18/01/2014 19:54

Margarine does not have the healthy kind of fats in it. too lazy to look it up

I got for an olive oil spread.

RestingActress · 18/01/2014 19:55

Proper block butter. It's not unhealthy which is more than can be said for the processed crap in a tub which is passed off as healthy margarine.

MerryMarigold · 18/01/2014 19:57

Block butter, yes. Not fussed on the brand. And put in a lovely butter dish. I love my butter dish. It makes me feel grown up. I don't use a milk jug, never, never, never.

ContinentalKat · 18/01/2014 19:58

I like Flora buttery. Tastes like butter, spreadable from the fridge and good for cooking and baking, too.

Since when is butter healthier than vegetable oil spread?

Joules68 · 18/01/2014 19:59

What is butter in a tub?

Butter.... Proper real butter

Apparently margarine is only one component away from being plastic

mscnile · 18/01/2014 19:59

Olive spread like Bertolli for sandwiches and proper butter, salted inca butter dish for bread/toast, unsalted for baking.

ARightOldPickle · 18/01/2014 19:59

Always proper butter, usually Country Life but will use others if on offer.

ShoeWhore · 18/01/2014 19:59

Lurpak spreadable or stick butter.

Isn't olive oil spread pretty similar to margarine?

mscnile · 18/01/2014 20:02

Olive oil spread much healthier than margarine, better fats, as is proper butter. Fats in margarine are trans fats.

LyndaCartersBigPants · 18/01/2014 20:03

It depends on your definition of healthy. It's widely accepted now that natural butter can be better for you than processed marg spreads, but some people are still scared of animal fat and prefer to choose overly processed foods.

Personally I prefer the taste and the natural unprocessed properties of butter, but find that marg makes lighter cakes so use utterly butterly or clover for cakes, even though I don't like the idea of eating that crap!

OpalQuartz · 18/01/2014 20:05

Hi. Thanks for all your replies. I wasn't expecting so many. I wasn't specifically looking for a margarine. Just asking if it was still called that as I put it as one of the options in my title. You don't really hear the word much any more. I knew about trans fats in margarine being bad, but I was under the impression they weren't used in spreads any more? Is that not the case? Are all spreads other than butter unhealthy? I prefer something that can be spread easily and quickly straight from the fridge when making sandwiches in the morning. Do those who use block butter leave it out so it's soft? If so, how long can you do this for? Thanks again.

Butter for us. Sainsbury's slightly salted organic.

Won't have anything else in the house. No need for margarine. Keep butter in a butter dish in the cupboard and it spreads reasonably easily. Making pastry with half butter half white fat (such as lard) is perfect and cakes are better with butter!

Having read how marg is made en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margarine I really don't want to eat it any more!

LulaPalooza · 18/01/2014 20:07

Lurpak spreadable.

DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2014 20:10

We only use butter in our house.

I keep a small amount out of the fridge so it is soft enough for spreading on sandwiches, and if necessary I put it in the microwave for a few seconds on the lowest power.

AfricanExport · 18/01/2014 20:10

Lurpack and stick butter. DH keeps nagging me to buy the benecol one though.

Snowdown · 18/01/2014 20:10

Butter, margarine is the food of the devil!

We've been experimenting with cultured butters for a stronger flavour. Kids like lurpak spreadable and I cook with unsalted.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/01/2014 20:11

Lurpak when on offer, or Clover or Country Life. All spreadable.
