Cheap recipes - no beans/pulses or oats!

LittleBabyPigsus · 12/01/2014 17:55

I am a student so on a budget, but also have IBS and beans/lentils and oats are my biggest triggers - so unfortunately no beans on toast or porridge! I have access to slow cookers (small and large),microwave, gas hob and electric oven (so prefer hob and slow cooker to oven!).

Any good ideas? I have looked at A Girl Called Jack and while I like the sounds of a lot of her recipes, not being able to have beans limits things a lot. No food dislikes, not a fussy eater at all.

There's a good website I think it's called student cookbook there's 10000s of recipes there

Jacket potato with various fillings (tuna, cheese, coleslaw, mince)
Corn tortillas with fillings (there is a chickpea one on here if peas/legumes are OK)
Vegetable curry

Sorry, its not clear from your post, can you tolerate wheat?
Eggs/cheese on toast
Pasta with various toppings

Sorry yes, I can have wheat as long as it's white bread/pasta etc.

Pasta is your friend here. Of you are really skint you can eat it with olive oil warmed through with fridge lemon, garlic and chilli.

Risotto? Roasted butternut squash risotto is good. Add some cooked chorizo if you like.

Watch out at your local sainsburys - they often do packs of 6-8 small lamb chops for a fiver. One chop, marinaded with lemon and oil and served with a jacket potato and and frozen veg is a nice "treat"

Buy frozen veg and use to make soups. Frozen pea and spinach is a fave here - fry chopped onion, add half each frozen peas and spinach, top with stock and cook for 10 minutes. Blend and serve with a spoon of yoghurt in each bowl.

Butternut soup is also a favourite around here but you can do a wide variety of veg soups, possibly jazzed up with some ham/bacon.

Roasted chicken thighs/legs can be cheap and delicious. Just marinade with with tomatoe sauce, oil, lemon juice and dried herbs. We've with veg and potatoes.

corned beef hash! boil poatoes and mix with tinned corned beef and a wee bit of chopped onion. Fry it all straightaway in a splash of oil ( you can makea 'hole' in it and fry an egg in it too), or form into little patties before frying.

Ratatouille - or really any combination of veg, tomatoes - can be cooked in the slow cooker I think? Serve with pasta or bread.

A sort of hot pot? Cheap stewing meat cooked in the slow cooker then topped with a layer of thinly sliced potatoes then finished off in the oven. Or indeed just chuck some chunks of potato into the stew and never mind the slicing!

My student standby was mushrooms fried off then mixed in with philly and a bit of yogurt, poured over pasta. Yum, I totally want that now!

I've just made wraps tonight with carrot, finely cut broccoli and sausage.

Ds ate his with ketchup. Dd ate hers with sweetcorn relish.

Surprisingly they were very filling.
