... just bung them in a pot with some sugar and cook them a bit until soft, then freeze or use the resulting goop for whatever?

Yes!

NotQuiteCockney · 24/07/2006 20:01

Cool. The red gooseberries are a bit old, so I don't want them to go wrong ...

Ok, they need a lot of sugar. Done, anyway.

Oh they are lovely.
I made a huge bowl of gooseberry fool with 3 lbs given to me last week by lovely neighbour.
It was insanely delicious.

WigWamBam · 24/07/2006 20:59

Ohhhhh, gooseberry fool ...

NotQuiteCockney · 24/07/2006 20:59

Is fool just whipped cream + fruit?

Yes.
Then put back in fridge to set.
Don't WWB.
You've started me off....
I had it for breakfast.........three days running.

WigWamBam · 24/07/2006 21:01

Ohhh ... for breakfast ...

NotQuiteCockney · 24/07/2006 21:02

Ugh!

I thought my appetite was back to normal, but clearly not, because, ugh! Breakfast.

(I keep wanting ice cream, and having oranges instead. Very strange.)

I think I may ask if she has more.
She was complainig about a glut.

There'd be no problem with a glut in this house,God no!!

WigWamBam · 24/07/2006 21:07

It's divine. Breakfast, lunch, tea, whenever.

My gooseberry bushes all ended up with mildew this year - am very jealous of your neighbour's glut, moondog.

moondog · 24/07/2006 21:08

I've never even seen a gooseberry bush,am ashamed to say.
Did you plant yours WWB?

WigWamBam · 24/07/2006 21:11

Yes, had them for about 6 years. My dad has an allotment and I begged some of his that were going spare. They've done really well up until this year. Will have to get some more for next year, mildew is a bugger. I spent hours picking off the sawfly caterpillars earlier on in the year and lost the damned things anyway!

moondog · 24/07/2006 21:12

How tall are they? How tall do they get?

Am getting braver as my tomato plants haven't died (yet)
The sky is the limit next year!

WigWamBam · 24/07/2006 22:01

Not very tall; 2 - 2.5 feet, something like that. They're pretty compact.

Go on, give it a go
