Cookery Book Club January - Two Hungry Italians and Nigel Slaters Eat/Jamie's Great Britain

Pantah630 · 02/01/2014 19:07

Happy New Year everyone, sorry this is a bit late. We picked Two Hungry Italians, Nigel's Eat (as lots got it for Christmas) and/or Jamie's Great Britain for this month.

I have the Italians on order and will look in the library for either of the other two or check out Jamie's website.

We're running short of ideas for future months if anyone has any suggestions. We have The Jewelled Kitchen earmarked for warmer months. I bought Tom Kerridge on Kindle so am keen to do that one soon.

I did the mozzarella sauce and wouldn't again. I would , no will, do pesto or sage butter next time. The mozzarella sauce was a very heavy, sticky type sauce. Literally like a pizza topping. Perhaps the quantities are wrong, but I used half the mozzarella suggested and it was still very very cheesy (and I love cheese)

ELR · 22/01/2014 11:23

Think I will do the gnocchi this weekend but will make some pesto I think as we all love it. Am about to flick through the books for inspiration for tea tonight. I have pancetta that needs using, any ideas?

pregnantpause · 22/01/2014 13:44

Mm, Jamie speedy butter beans for lunch. Added bacon lardons (10p in lidl this morning) and scaled down, but overall very nice. Dd enjoyed it, and I thought it made a nice meal, though as a side I think it might be a bit heavy, but that could be because of the bacon.

Can I ask if a decision was made re February? There's less than ten days and if some people (like me) are buying the books or ordering at the library advance is good.

I vote for Rachel allens everyday kitchen as I'm very eager to cook from it, and a Claudia roden or French book.Smile

Pantah630 · 22/01/2014 17:24

Feb not confirmed but a quick shufty up thread CR coming out on top. Which one though? Or should it be any CR book you have or can lay hands on? I'll have a look in library as I don't have any and really, really need to not spend any more in feb. Car insurance, bike tax, already needed :(

I have Rachel Allen's Bake and Favourite food at Home and Favourite a Food...have cooked from none of them so I suggest for February. Any Claudia Roden and Rachel Allen you have or can beg or borrow...NO cookbook buying in February. There are plenty of online RA recipes if necessary and I suspect with some digging we will find some CR ones too. How's that?

Ps .. I've go taking Edwards cooling in their skins for the gnocchi and I'll make basil pesto from THI also. I also got pork steaks for the blood orange pork for tomorrow or Friday.

Hi all,
I have three Rachel Allen books but no claudia ones but like pantah said I'm sure we can google and also put recipes up for everyone to share.
I'm happy with that.

glorious · 22/01/2014 19:14

I have none but that's fine can I buy some and pretend I haven't

I'm back to work in February anyway so may be less ambitious than this month Smile

madamecake · 22/01/2014 19:54

I'm happy with those too. Been watching some of Rachel Allen's shows on good food recently and there are a few recipes I'd like to make, especially a chocolate and salted caramel tart, yum.

Pantah630 · 22/01/2014 20:19

The gnocchi was amazing, the best I've had in a very long time and that was in an excellent Italian brasserie. Very impressed. I'm freezing half but so tempted to grab them out and cook the rest. Soft pillows of loveliness. The pesto was also very nice, I didn't add pepper as it didn't call for it in recipe but think I might next time. I also succumbed an bought balsamic pearls while in Waitrose, they're bloody lovely on a tomato salad. Very happy tummies tonight. DH's is on a plate in microwave as he's working very late tonight, DS2 and I tempted to divvy it up Grin he can have toast!!

Thanks Pantah, roll on February!

Cantdothisagain · 22/01/2014 22:19

The Rachel A salted caramel chocolate tart is really really good... I recommend it. I also make the enchiladas from her new book a lot - they aren't anything special but they use ingredients I always have and are a family hit. The easy millionaires shortbread isn't good though IMO, too sloppy and rich. I will get the book out to plan Feb and say if I've tried any others; can't remember off hand.

No Claudia here but can google so happy with these.

Oh and this month have been v slack, sorry! I have made the chorizo burger which was good and am contemplating the slow cooked rabbit...

ScienceRocks · 22/01/2014 23:07

I made nigel Slater's lamb cutlets with feta yogurt dip tonight. Well, I used lamb chops instead of cutlets, and did some potatoes and veg as well. Glad I did as there was masses of the yogurt feta dip. Next time I would add a squeeze of lemon to the dip to cut the richness.

I don't have Claudia Roden or Rachel Allen, but can google. I MUST NOT buy any more cookbooks.

Can I put a plea in for paul Hollywood? And Leon? And, if people are dieting, how about the hairy dieters?

ScienceRocks · 22/01/2014 23:07

Glorious, your link didn't work for me, which ikea are you going to?

glorious · 23/01/2014 07:02

oh it wasn't a link Smile Croydon

ELR · 23/01/2014 07:57

Yes plea for Leon too, I have Paul Hollywood's first book bread from years ago so wouldn't buy any more but sure there would be a cross over.
Planning the welsh cakes, mini scotch eggs and smoked trout with yorkies from jamie and the courgette rolls and gnocchi from two greedy Italians and as yet I'm still to cook from eat!! I think it's because it's almost like I know all the recipes if that makes sense, they are almost all versions of things I kind of do already!! I need an EAT mojo!!

pregnantpause · 23/01/2014 10:40

Damn it! I've just bought a Leon book (but as I still have under 100 cookbooks I think it's okay to more). I also have hairy dieters but have cooked nothing from itShock so wouldn't mind it for future months.

HuevosRancheros · 23/01/2014 11:14

Hi, I haven't forgotten/left you all, but I'm still waiting for the library to give me my books Sad
been following your progress though :)

I have never heard of Leon Shock
Amazon lists loads, which would you recommend?
Thanks :)

Pantah630 · 23/01/2014 11:26

I can borrow Hairy Dieters, DS1 has it. Can't find Leon cheap anywhere but vaguely recall seeing a copy in TKMaxx a long time ago. As huevos says, which Leon one is the best or to be recommended. Where've you been? We missed you, and tiger and pete :(

OP posts:
Pantah630 · 23/01/2014 11:31

elr my Nan said my welsh cakes needed to be thicker, I had them rolled out to almost thumbnail depth but she requested them up to first knuckle depth for authenticity. They tasted good though.

I'm hopeful there are some PH recipes online, the BBC are normally good at sharing recipes from series so that could save some of us.

Am earmarking him and HB Dieters for March unless I hear otherwise, and Leon (one of) plus another for April.

OP posts:
glorious · 23/01/2014 12:30

Leon is a chain of cafes, guess it might be London based.

huevos how annoying. I can type something up if you fancy anything? Index on amazon is my go-to for such situations!

pregnantpause · 23/01/2014 13:31

Hello again huevousGrin nice to have you backSmile
Is it tiger that has the 365 day meal plan blog? I think it might be, so perhaps that's why she's not in.

HuevosRancheros · 23/01/2014 16:18

I've been here all along, just lurking :)
Recent books haven't been too good for me as a veggie.....I did get "Feast" and "Nigella's Christmas" from the library just to make the gingerbread which you all raved about, and it was lovely. Yes, the recipe was online, but I wondered if anything else might take my fancy, but sadly, it didn't.

I am looking forward to seeing "Eat", if the library ever gives it to me Hmm Angry. I have all of Nigel's other books, but so rarely cook from them, just read them, I thought I would get it from the library first, rather than buy it straight away like I usually do Grin

Have also ordered the Italians from the library - i'm sure I will enjoy reading it, but doubt it will have much veggie stuff. We'll see!

Have ordered two Leon books (Ingredients and Recipes; the second one, can't remember its name) from the library in anticipation :)
They have a veggie one due out in March, so I can see if I like their style

Yay :)
