Alternate to steak in a suet crust steamed pudding

Last night I made a steamed steak pudding.

Hadn't done one in a long time. It was a glorious success. But we don't eat much red meat and I'd like to do one more often in these winter months.

Has anyone had success with different fillings? Chicken or vegetables? I'm wondering if my chicken and mushroom or chicken and leek pie fillings would work. Or a variety of mushrooms? Or even roots?

You could easily use chicken. I bet roots work really well because they would stand up to a long slow cooking time.

Do you use proper suet or veggie suet.

ham and mustard sauce + maybe mash. sainsburys near me used to do these and they were mouth watering

doesn't really help re red meat though... sorry!

Thankyou.

I used proper suet this time. Have used the veggie suet in the past. I think the 'proper' suet gives the effect I'm after. But I'm happy to try the veggie one again.

I usually serve it with mash and greens and extra gravy.

Any one got a recipe for a different filling from steak?

I love real suet too, veggies not the same.

Gary Rhodes Mushroom and onion suet pudding.

I'd use a mixture of lentils (green, split yellow, red) and a mixture of mushrooms.

chicken and leek or chicken and mushroom? Smoked fish in a parsley sauce? Mixed root vegetables with a mustardy cheese sauce?

Love all these ideas. Thankyou.

I steamed my steak pudding for 2 hours ( but the filling was already cooked - slow cooked for about 3 hours). So I assume whatever filling I use it will still need 2 hours steaming. Is that right do you think?

Had a pub meal which was chicken and ham in a sort of white sauce. It was very yummy
