London Restaurant Recommendations - preferably for tasting menu

DH and I have decided that for Xmas this year instead of buying each other stuff we don't actually want we will put the money towards going out for a really posh meal.

We have been to Le Gavroche and Petrus in London and loved them both. We want a tasting menu with matching wine. We have been looking on the internet to try and decide where to go and are finding it really difficult. Anyone got sun suggestions. Live in Kent so need to be able to get there by train and tube.

Gaultier in soho. It's amazing! I was given a voucher for a tasting menu last year. We didn't even choose our wine. They brought wine to match each course. It was an evening I will never forget. A very special place, you must go. We even had our own private dining room!

Sounds good. I've seen them on groupon.

Not sure transport wise if this is a goer for you but Hedone in Chiswick is excellent. For extra they will provide a wine tasting option too but be prepared to stagger out if you actually finish a glass with each course.

Fab food.

Am assuming you've already done the tasting at the Sportsman in Kent already? If not, do! It's about half the price, to boot!

In terms of London places our best tasting was probably The Ledbury. Faultless. Had very good meals at Launceston Place, Dinner, Viajante, The Square, Trinity and Marcus Wareing. But really the Ledbury is head and shoulders.

Thanks all, Ledbury is definitely one we had thought of, glad to hear such a positive review. We definitely want to have the matching wines, so worth it.

Not been to the one in Kent, will look that up. If that's cheaper maybe I can persuade hubby to do that too!! London might be better for us as we can definitely both drink then.

Have you thought about Pollen Street Social - we loved it. The tasting menu we had (several months ago now) was worth every penny, wonderful food and a lovely informal atmosphere.

windywoo26 · 27/12/2013 20:50

That does look lovely Milly, will put that on the list. Thanks

Morgan M, so lovely. Chef often comes out at the end of the meal to have a chat. We loved the food and the wine.

Snowdown · 28/12/2013 12:41

Sorry just noticed Morgon M have closed. Ledbury is on our list too but the next stop is La Gavroche...hopefully!

Hibiscus is very good for a tasting menu. It's on Maddox Street, about 200yds from Oxford Circus station, so should be easy for train + tube journeys to/from the restaurant.

windy you HAVE to do the Sportsman. It's a ramshackle old pub on the marsh near Whistable. Your hopes aren't very high...and then the FOOD! Regularly makes it onto lists of places chefs eat in the UK. Michelin starred. Make their own ham and even salt. Lots of lovely seafood, but their philosophy is there's nothing that can't be improved with an addition of some pork derivative. Witness turbot with pork scratchings Grin. I have told DP if we ever get married it needs to be there and I want a cake made out of a tower of scratchings...

Oblomov · 28/12/2013 20:45

Mum too me to hisbiscus and I liked it very much.
Am watching with interest for others to try.

windywoo26 · 28/12/2013 20:59

?? stinking, love the idea of the scratching tower. My DH would have loved that at our wedding. Will take DH to Sportsman for his birthday then. I can drive him then. As this is a joint present (and I've not long had a baby) I really want to go out and enjoy the wine as much as the food.

We went to the bistro part of Vijante a few months ago which was amazing. The food was quite unusual, Portuguese, but so delicious. In the evening they do a tasting menu in their main restaurant but best be quick as I've heard that chef Nuno Mendez is leaving soon Sad

Pollen Street Social is also on our list to try.

catwithflowers · 29/12/2013 14:08

Vijante sample tasting menu. Some unusual items but sounds really interesting!!
