healthy cereals for kids?

After a stay at MIL's, DD (2.8) has developed a taste for breakfast cereals.

I am not sure which cereals are healthy enough for her as they all seem full of sugar. I don't mind sugar as an occasional treat but I like her everyday breakfast to be healthy.

Any recommendations?

I think shreddies and weetabix are ok

Most cereals are very sugary

Weetabix isn't too bad or porridge that you make yourself from oats. Grape nuts. Some types of non Nestle shredded wheat. Otherwise there's nothing I would give my kids on a regular basis, a and I'm sure many will disagree with some of mine

Porridge only here, the rest are too processed for every day eating. They are partial to a box of junk cereal over holiday times though.

Try the Rude Health brand. They do puffed oats, puffed rice and puffed wheat which have no added sugar. Some of their other products have honey in them.

DD also eats supermarket brand shredded wheat, wholewheat minis and porridge as they don't have added sugar.

Only boring ones, shreddies taste like extruded cardboard and wheaterbix like sawdust.

Cereals must contain sugar or have sugar added or they are inedible.

I will look up Rude Health, it sounds like the best of a bad bunch.

MIL bought her a huge box of rice crispies and I really don't want it to become her regular breakfast! She normally has porridge or a banana or toast (homemade bread) but I don't want to ban cereals altogether as DD really loves the concept :)

MIL seems to think that sugar = love; in the space of just 1 day she gave DD the cereals, an advent calendar, sweets and ice cream!

Try greek yoghurt, pancakes- crepes and fluffy, eggy bread, homemade smoothies, avocado as alternatives.

Reading this with interest, as my DS isn't a breakfast person and can't be tempted to eat no-sugar cereals but I won't give him sugary ones. He ends up eating banana, or wholemeal toast or yoghurt, but nothing reliably and tends to just want to drink milk. I don't want him to go to Kindergarten hungry, but not sure what else to give him.
For those who eat pancakes, do you have anything on them? Are they regular ones or mini scotch pancakes?

Agree with others that cereals are over processed over sugared over priced and nutritionally inferior to many other breakfasts. They don;t form part of my 2.4 year old's diet and I only have branflakes when I am ill (for some reason they settle my stomach if queasy!).

We do porridge, egg & soldiers, egg & steamed new potato cubes & beans, banana & plain greek yogurt as regular breakfasts. Occasionally she asks for cheese, oatcakes/ryvita & cucumber. I find this an odd choice for breakfast but am perfectly happy for her to have it!

Pancakes are all sorts of things, from lemon and ricotta, I mostly use spelt flour as I'm not big on gluten...they put frozen fruit, maple syrup, lemon and sugar, greek yoghurt. Sometimes I make them using almond butter, eggs and bananas. I think it's hard to avoid the sugar but I wouldn't feed them processed food for dinner everyday and I won't do it for breakfast so the no cereal rule stands.

DS is hooked on the Boots toddler cereal - the hoops. They seem okay in terms of ingredients.

He doesn't like porridge, or pancakes unfortunately - pity as it makes it not worth the hassle of making them often & I love both.

We have porridge too, although as the weather gets warmer we will move onto wheat biscuits. We are not as good as most of you as we top the porridge with honey or maple syrup and the wheat biscuits with a teaspoon of hundreds and thousands! I refuse to buy branded cereals as they are so much more expensive and higher in sugar.

split - oatcakes and cheese are my preferred breakfast too. I hate sweet breakfasts.

We don't buy cereals either except weetabix and porridge. Weetabix I often top with a bit of honey and blueberries or banana.
I'm sure we save money too. They seem so expensive.

I tend to go for porridge, shredded wheat, weetabix, shreddies and rice crispies for no/low sugar options. Basics and value brands tend to have less salt and sugar than branded options.

We have porridge, cornflakes, oat crisp, weetabix, bite size shredded wheat and other wholegrain cereals. They aren't too bad. My 3 yr old has never tried cereals like frosties or choco type ones, i guess she'd want them all the time.

We are in the porridge or Weetabix camp too.
Occasionally we have shreddies or museli

We mix it with different toast topping banana and proper peanut butter.
Bagels and honey.
Pancakes or crumpets. I get bored with breakfast so I try mix it up for them.
