7 year old birthday party menu - sound ok??

OK, so its not exactly home made couscous and wholemeal pitta, but I wanted to do something they will actually eat!

Ham sandwiches
Egg mayo sandwiches
cubes of cheese
crisps
little cooked sausages
balls of honeydew & watermelon (hurrah I get to use friend's melon baller!!) mixed up in a bowl
bowls of green & red grapes mixed up

Birthday cake
mini fruit muffins
mars bar crispie
party ring biscuits

There is absolutely no point in putting out cucumber/carrot sticks as the little blighters will just leave them - as seen at every other party this year!

Hope it sounds OK I'm usually a real cheat and just pay for everyone to got a fun factory

and then eat those 3

would they need forks or spoons to eat the melon - if so then don't bother !

Start with the simple stuff, and if you have time and enthusiasm go for the more fiddly bits last.

MamaG · 20/07/2006 15:00

good idea. WAsn't planning to supply any cutlery so maybe I should stick with chunks

oh well I'll make myself some balls

KBear · 20/07/2006 15:22

or just slice it into "smiles" and let them get on with it!

Greensleeves · 20/07/2006 15:24

I reckon frag the melon. Eat it yerself. You'll only end up with a load of wet sticky children who stench of melon.

KBear · 20/07/2006 15:28

Greensleeves, leave her, she's trying to be posh and healthy!

Bet she's giving them sausage rolls really

poisson · 20/07/2006 17:11

lol@melon god if youwant to do ti do ti!

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:22

My balls are magnificent

Just done half a watermelon and a whole honeydew, kids were quite excited bless them but I only let them eat the "non" ball bits!

I am SO impressed but also that I have devoted quite so much time to: "melon - balls or not?"

KBear - they had sausage rolls & fruit shoots LAST year

My DS2 had his b/day party yesterday, and had all ages there.

menu was.....

pizza cut to fingers(cheese and tomatoe)
mini sausages
eggs cut into quaters
pot of tuna mixed with salad cream.
king prawns
medditeranian couscous
savoury rice
salad
cucumber and carrot sticks
bread and butter slices
strawberries
cherries
two types of melons (not balled tho, just cubed)
grapes
apples

mars crispie birthday cake

many many ice lollies

jelly

all was devoured, and then Flame went out for £12 more fruit which was then also quickly devoured.

think the one thing not as popular was the cake as it had melted!!!!!

most heathiest party food I have ever done as would never before thought that the fruit would have been so popular, but that went first, and we had to go get more!!!!

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:32

ooh yours sounds MUCH posher than mine - apart from the cubed melon though

I thought about ice lollies, but not sure if place has a freezer. Will make sure I take loads of fruit.

psychomum5 · 20/07/2006 18:35

preening at the posh comment.....am sooooo not!!!!

only reason that melon not balled is cos I don't have one!!!!

psychomum5 · 20/07/2006 18:37

is there any way of you freezing some of the calypso clear ice pops and then taking them in a huge freezer box???? they won't melt as quickly as they will mainly be insulated by each other (IYGWIM?)

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:38

thats a good idea, I'll do that

Blondilocks · 20/07/2006 18:40

They both sound good menus. I think I'll have to steal a few ideas if you don't mind for dd's party in September.

I always make too much food! At LO's last mummy-hosted party cucumber sticks went down very well - I guess it just depends on the group of children.

What kind of drinks are you serving? I tend to have a selection of squash, fruit juice & a few grown-up drinks like tea & coffee for my helpers!

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:42

Just got some fruit juices & squash for the kids and tea & coffee for the grown ups - the party is in a function room above a pub (such a chav!) so adults can get a drink if they want to from down there.

I don't what it is about cucumber & carrot sticks, but they just keep getting left! THink its a 7 year old conspiracy at our local school

lol. It's hard to know what to do for food.

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:47

I've been a real cheat with b'day cake too. I'm making it at DD's insistence (which I am actually thrilled about!!) but I have bought 2 victoria sponge cakes to cut up in advance and put in party bags - save me faffing about on the day.

I'm a bit at myself for buying them tho, as they are sooo easy to make, but I've got loads of stuff to do without making 3 bloody cakes!!

drinks for mine were huge jugs of cold squash with many ice cubes, and then juice or coffee/tea for adults. Mine was also done at home, and pretty much went on all day....still had people at 9pm!!!!(we had bouncy castle)

In fact, bouncy castle man rang at 8pm (when he was supposed to be collecting said castle) and said that due to the rain he wouldn't be collecting castle till tonight as he didn't need it till weekend and he can't collect and store wet. Has meant that they still are bouncing (best ever £40 spent, fab childcare), and has turned into yet more partying today with some other friends who couldn't make yesterday coming today. Meant yet more fruit shopping tho and more ice loolies eaten!

MamaG · 20/07/2006 18:49

Sounds excellent - I wasn't brave enough to do it at home!

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 20/07/2006 18:55

I wasn't even planning a party.....only phoned and booked castle on tuesday, and then rand guests!!!!

Reason being was that all, (and I do mean ALL) birthdays this year so far have been cancelled due to me (two with me having nasty tummy bug and then was squashed in my car 2 days before DS1's b/day). Got thro tho this time till day before party and decided that nothing bad was actually befalling me so could maybe, just actually, do a party.......and did!!!!!!

and now, here am I sat with bouncy castle babysitting kiddies!

MamaG · 21/07/2006 16:09

FUCK. I've just FUCKED the cake. FUCK
